The 6 uses of Big Data in banking

1. Increase efficiency - shorten the time to get information from db

2. Reduce cost - in maintaining the data infrastructure

How Big Data Can Make Health Care Better, Smarter and Cheaper

How Big Data Can Make Health Care Better, Smarter and Cheaper | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

Health is particularly well suited to benefit from big data. McKinsey & Company estimates that the use of big data in health care could produce a savings of up to almost half a trillion dollars.

Luca Naso's insight:

Want to know which drugs are least likely to have side effects? Which individual doctors have the best outcomes? Which procedures are most cost-effective? Big data could answer these questions and more.

There are three major areas where big data is revolutionizing health care.

1. identify patients at high-risk for certain medical conditions before major problems occur

2. increase the quality of care received by patients

3. reduce the mounting costs of health care

However, as the firm points out, the benefits of big data will not come automatically. It will take strong partnerships between the technology companies like Siemens building the tools and the health care providers using them to achieve even a fraction of the potential savings.

Bringing ‘Big Data’ to Horse Racing

Bringing ‘Big Data’ to Horse Racing | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
Horse racing seems like a perfect candidate for the “big data” treatment: If more information about horses’ movements, their bodies and behavior were collected and analyzed, wouldn’t it be easier to handicap?
Luca Naso's insight:

The big-thinkers call that “messy data” because it’s difficult read, but that may be where racing should dig in, just as happened with baseball when some new metrics were introduced. â€śIf you look at the things that actually count in the long run statistically, then you can predict much better"

When you are dealing with Big Data, it _always_ looks messy at the beginning.

You then need some Big Brains to turn the mess into a gold mine.

The Next Big Thing In Sports Data: Predicting (And Avoiding) Injuries

The Next Big Thing In Sports Data: Predicting (And Avoiding) Injuries | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
Can data tell a player's future? Teams like the San Antonio Spurs and New England Patriots are betting on it.
Luca Naso's insight:

In sports, injuries don’t just cost wins. They cost money. By one estimate, teams across Major League Baseball spent $665 million last year on the salaries of banged-up guys and their replacements.

Now, the fast-growing industry of performance analytics says it can minimize those massive losses. The trick: using data to anticipate how an athlete will get hurt before it actually happens.

Performance analytics have the potential to extend a player’s career, but it can also reveal hidden physical problems and shorten careers. If a player is shown to be at a heavy risk for injury, what owner is going to pay that person big bucks?

Furthering Big Data's Retail Benefits

Furthering Big Data's Retail Benefits | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

If your retail business isn't currently using big data to its fullest potential, it may behoove you to look at how data and analytics can do even more for your company's customers – and its revenue.

Luca Naso's insight:

Recently, market research firm PSFK Labs released the fourth annual report in its series "The Future of Retail," focusing on what those in the industry should consider in 2014.

It made a point of noting that customers expect to enjoy a shopping experience that's perfectly tailored to them across all channels (in-store, online and via mobile).

For this to occur, big data analytics must – and can – be used to offer the direct customer service and personalization that so many consumers seek.

Kaitlyn Gregg's curator insight, November 5, 2014 3:24 PM

Big Data can pretty accurately predict consumer potential reactions, their worth as a customer throughout the lifetime, and what the trends are in order to continue satisfying them.  Its crazy how much big data can be essential to retail's success and keeping consumers happy.

What happened ten years ago is important, but now taking into account what happened yesterday (even earlier today), is what I see really driving predictive models in the next decade.
