Hadoop and the Internet of Things: Better together

Hadoop and the Internet of Things: Better together | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

The Internet of Things continues to grow more popular, and the network of devices connected to it gets bigger every day. Gartner has estimated that there will be 26 billion devices connected to the IoT within the next six years.

Luca Naso's insight:

Up to now the Internet of Things has mainly focused on the data generation part (sensors and devices).

It is now time for the Analytics side to take over. Here is where Hadoop can make the difference.

However, my expectations are that IoT will boom with Real-Time analytics, and Hadoop can be of little use in this scenario.

(Big) Data Evolution - Infographic | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

"Here are some interesting facts you might not know about big data via The Visual Capitalist"

Luca Naso's insight:

It all started in late 60s with zip codes;

- then demographic data were added;

- which were complemented with Lifestyle data;

- whose power was optimized with Attitudinal data;

- and today Behavioural data (or social) has brought data to an entire new level (see the four V of Big Data).

However, the challenge remains. In fact, it gets harder and harder: how to use the data to make reliable predictions?

Traditional marketing – killed by digital? Yes, that ship has sailed

Traditional marketing – killed by digital? Yes, that ship has sailed | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

It only takes $5 to $10 to reach an average of 1,000 viewers in digital marketing; compared to $10 – $487 in its traditional counterpart.

Luca Naso's insight:

For most businesses, the digital media as a platform of choice makes more business sense because:

1. digital media is cost effective.

2. digital media makes targeted messaging a lot easier.

3. digital marketing gives companies more freedom to adjust its campaign.

mcgrawmarketing's comment November 2, 2013 8:35 AM
I've been measuring traditional campaign performance for 30 years so I don't buy the 'easier to track' argument. What I have experienced is younger, less experienced marketers that cut their teeth in PPC/SEO/Email show their ignorance concerning how to track traditional marketing.

And as for the low cost per lead, there are too many out there confusing an inquiry with a lead which drags the CPL calculation down. I prefer looking at the cost per sale - it's more relevant anyway.

Don't get me wrong - digital marketing has it's place but traditional is not dead when used correctly.

The Four V's of Big Data | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
Imagine all the information you alone generate each time you swipe your credit card, post to social media, drive your car, leave a voicemail, or visit a doctor.
Luca Naso's insight:

In addition to the traditional 3 Vs of Big Data

-Volume

-Velocity

-Variety

IBM scientists have added a 4th one:

-Veracity.

I couldn't agree more.

Hidden in Big Data you can find almost any kind of correlation you want, but not all of them are significant, that's why still "one in three business leaders do not trust the information they use to make decisions."

Fàtima Galan's curator insight, July 30, 2013 5:12 AM

The Veracity although is one of the las Vs of Big Data is very important because if you combine your data with expired or lapsed data your result will be worthless. The veracity is important for two reasons: to be sure the authenticity of the source and if the data has been updated.
