D-Day 70th anniversary brings good news for D-Day Museum redevelopment plans | Visiting The Past | Scoop.it

During the week when the thoughts of many are turning towards the momentous events of June 6 1944 and the Normandy invasion, the museum commemorating the D-Day landings has received a green light for ambitious redevelopment plans.

The D-Day Museum in Portsmouth has been given initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a £4.1 million redevelopment that promises to tell the D-Day story to modern museum visitors.

It can now work on fully developed proposals to compete for a final award from the Fund in two years’ time, with the focus on a transformation of its building and displays well ahead of D-Day 75 in 2019.

Amy Winehouse exhibition opens at the Jewish Museum

Amy Winehouse exhibition opens at the Jewish Museum | Visiting The Past | Scoop.it

An exhibition about the life of Amy Winehouse has opened streets away from where she died aged 27.

The Jewish Museum in London's Camden Town has worked with her family to gather the star's clothes, record collection and dozens of photographs for the show.

The exhibits, put together with the help of her brother Alex, include fridge magnets, childhood books and her audition essay to the Sylvia Young stage school...

[Alex] said: "This is a snapshot of a girl who was, to her deepest core, simply a little Jewish kid from north London with a big talent who, more than anything, just wanted to be true to her heritage."

I See London (But I Skip France) Just To See The Vintage Underpants - Deanna Dahlsad @ CollectorsQuest | Visiting The Past | Scoop.it

I’ve not yet been to London, or any other place across The Pond, but when I read this story of spies and lingerie–

Hold on a minute! Did I just say “spies and lingerie”?!

Yes; yes I did.

Former spy and first female Director General of MI5, Dame Stella Rimington (who went on to author spy novels), has just helped to open a huge historical archive for major UK retailer Marks & Spencer.
