Grassroots 1960s Push Reformed Women's Health Care | Womens eNews

Grassroots 1960s Push Reformed Women's Health Care | Womens eNews | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

The women's health movement of the 1960s and 1970s transformed the doctor-patient relationship and yielded the novel concept that women can take control of their own health, says Laurie Edwards in this excerpt from "In the Kingdom of the Sick."...

For women, this change started with the radical notion that they had a right to know about their own bodies, had a right to control their own health care and belonged in medical schools where they could fully participate in the very health care decisions that have such significance in their lives. The grassroots women's health activism that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s was fostered by an equally diverse group of advocates, among them middle-class white women, middle- and working-class African Americans, lesbians and heterosexuals.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Remember that scene in Mad Men, where Betty's doctor calls Don & talks to him about Betty as if she were the child? This is how we got away from that.

"Feminism challenged social practices in the doctor's office and recast relationships between compliant patient and infallible physician as part of the larger process to keep women down."

But we must also look at this history and see how we are moving backwards in America;  this is also a dire warning about where we are headed.

"The landmark court case Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in 1973 by finding that preventing a woman's right to end her pregnancy violated her due process, was a pivotal piece of legislation in terms of reproductive rights, women's health and women's ability to make decisions regarding their bodies. "

Activist Spotlight: Deon Haywood on Justice and the Movement in New Orleans

Activist Spotlight: Deon Haywood on Justice and the Movement in New Orleans | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

In May of this year, I talked to Deon Haywood, Executive Director of Women With A Vision in New Orleans about her approach to organizing. WWAV scored a significant grassroots legal and political victory in the last year with the NO Justice campaign, which removed hundreds of cis and trans women from Louisiana’s registered felony sexual offender rolls. Deon is a longtime activist in the city of New Orleans, with a history of organizing low-income women of color around reproductive justice, harm reduction, and human rights.

...We are not all in the same boat. And if we keep playing like we are, we’re not really going to make the kind of change we’d like to see. Because the women I work with are never going to be able to jump into the sex workers’ rights movement. They don’t feel like that movement is for them.

Paris Agency Introduces Come4.org, a Porn Site Devoted to Charity (NSFW) | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

What if being bad could do some good? That's the question asked by Come4.org, which describes itself as "the first user-generated, nonprofit pornography site devoted to funding charitable and ethically driven projects."

The site is being unveiled with help from the Paris office of TBWA agency Being, which crafted an explicit 90-second short film, "The Lover," introducing Come4's first charitable initiative—helping to fund the Asta Philpot Foundation, which is committed to raising public awareness about the sexual rights of disabled people. (Philpot, an American living in Britain, advocates the right to an active sexual life for people with disabilities, even if it means paying for sex.)

Isle Of Man Lesbian Couple Can't Rent The House They Wanted Because Of Their Sexual Orientation

Isle Of Man Lesbian Couple Can't Rent The House They Wanted Because Of Their Sexual Orientation | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Following a discriminatory act based on their sexual orientation, a lesbian couple of Isle of Man wishes an anti-discriminatory law for LGBTQ people.

The landlord refused the rental agreement with Kara Izzard and Laura Cull because they are lesbians.

They have had then the bad surprise to discover that there is no law in Isle of Man to protect them in this kind of situation whereas civil unions and adoption are possible for same-sex couples.

"I was so shocked to hear this and felt sick, said Cull.

"I didn't know where to go or what to do as I didn't have a legal leg to stand on so after speaking with my partner Kira we thought that the only thing we could do was to share our story with as many people as possible and try and raise awareness that on this beautiful island that we call home we can still be treated this way."

A sex worker's response to columnist Mia Freedman's blog in which implied that she does not respect the right of women with mental illness to become sex workers. | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

As a sex worker who has both mental illness(es) and a history of abuse Mia Freedman’s post perpetuates stereotypes and stigmas that harm me. Should my mental illness prevent me from having any agency? Didn’t we do away with locking the mentally ill up and throwing away the key (although this still does happen) because we (as a society) started to recognise the mentally ill as humans with rights? Or do we only have some rights? Like the right to work in a low paying, menial job or the right to exist (not live because let’s face it, it isn’t a living wage) on the disability support pension and that is if you even qualify for it, if you don’t you can always try and get by on unemployment “benefits” while you are made to apply for jobs you will never get. Surely I still have the right to have sex don’t I? I can’t see Mia Freedman advocating for enforced chastity belts for the mentally ill. So, if I have the right to work and the right to have sex, what is wrong with me having sex as my work?
