There are more people that approve of polygamy, than there are people that approve the United States Congress! | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

A poll conducted by the New York Times in October of 2011, stated that only 9% of people approved of Congress. Basically, 91% of the polled population believed that Congress was no good, and that they didn't trust them.

If you think that number is shocking, just wait until you hear about how many people support polygamy! Shockingly, polygamy being labelled as "morally acceptable" is approved by 11%!

Grassroots 1960s Push Reformed Women's Health Care | Womens eNews

Grassroots 1960s Push Reformed Women's Health Care | Womens eNews | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

The women's health movement of the 1960s and 1970s transformed the doctor-patient relationship and yielded the novel concept that women can take control of their own health, says Laurie Edwards in this excerpt from "In the Kingdom of the Sick."...

For women, this change started with the radical notion that they had a right to know about their own bodies, had a right to control their own health care and belonged in medical schools where they could fully participate in the very health care decisions that have such significance in their lives. The grassroots women's health activism that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s was fostered by an equally diverse group of advocates, among them middle-class white women, middle- and working-class African Americans, lesbians and heterosexuals.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Remember that scene in Mad Men, where Betty's doctor calls Don & talks to him about Betty as if she were the child? This is how we got away from that.

"Feminism challenged social practices in the doctor's office and recast relationships between compliant patient and infallible physician as part of the larger process to keep women down."

But we must also look at this history and see how we are moving backwards in America;  this is also a dire warning about where we are headed.

"The landmark court case Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in 1973 by finding that preventing a woman's right to end her pregnancy violated her due process, was a pivotal piece of legislation in terms of reproductive rights, women's health and women's ability to make decisions regarding their bodies. "

“Objectively So Rare” & Rare Objectivity | Cult of Gracie

“Objectively So Rare” & Rare Objectivity | Cult of Gracie | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

It’s important to note that the horrors of the Cleveland abductions had nothing to do with sex trafficking; Ariel Castro’s atrocities were his, the acts of single criminal male.

[This is also something folks would be equally wise to remember when it comes to the use of the word "sadist" in description of his acts; this has nothing to do with BDSM, neither in porn nor practice. Just as whatever religion Castro professes to prescribe to has nothing to do with that faith's real practice, any other associations, assumed or claimed, should not be accepted. Castro's inhumanity is his; to lay it at the feet of some other group, to misrepresent its origins or associations, to pretend it came from some "other" or otherwise purport false dangers, these things create panic and other actions which do not serve public safety or justice. Castro, and those like him, should be held accountable for their actions.]

Anti-Prostitution Pledge Heads to Supreme Court | The Nation

Anti-Prostitution Pledge Heads to Supreme Court | The Nation | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

On Monday, the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in a case that will decide if recipients of government aid can be forced to oppose prostitution – or potentially any other issue as a contingency of receiving U.S. funds. The case, Alliance for Open Society International v United States Agency for International Development, arises from a controversial policy governing AIDS education, prevention, and treatment, a decade-long fight that's crossed political lines and was kicked off by Rep. Chris Smith as part of a larger conservative attempt to undermine reproductive and sexual health care. With HIV and AIDS projects facing closure if they don't adopt the government's position on sex work, it's sex workers who are paying the ultimate price.

Kansas bill calls for HIV positive people to be quarantined

Kansas bill calls for HIV positive people to be quarantined | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

A proposed bill in Kansas is calling for people with HIV or AIDS to be quarantined.

Lawmakers are close to passing a new law discriminating against those who have HIV or AIDS, forcing them to be isolated or have their movements restricted.

Kansas House Bill 2183, which has passed in the Kansas Senate, will update the state’s public health statute by allowing quarantine of Kansans with ‘infectious diseases.’

Senator Marci Francisco attempted to restore an amendment providing an exclusion for people living with HIV/AIDS, saying the disease is not spread through casual contact and the bill could permit discrimination.

Bill would ban Planned Parenthood from sex ed

Bill would ban Planned Parenthood from sex ed | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Legislation to ban Planned Parenthood from providing sex education materials or instruction in public schools drew a spirited response Tuesday at the Capitol.

Supporters of the ban — contained in a bill by Sen. Ken Paxton, R-McKinney — accused Planned Parenthood of placing an inappropriate emphasis on sexual freedom, while opponents accused Paxton of attempting to force school districts to abide by unneeded restrictions that would limit local control on instruction.
