The Hypersexualization of Women With Bipolar Disorder: Breaking Silences Day 3

The Hypersexualization of Women With Bipolar Disorder: Breaking Silences Day 3 | Sex Positive | Scoop.it
Most of the academic and popular literature on sexuality and disability focuses on how disabled people are desexualized, or seen as nonsexual. Meghann and Hailee mentioned several writers and theories; one term that was new to me (though the idea is familiar) was Harlan Hahn’s concept of “asexual objectification.” This is the idea that disabled women, disabled people of any gender really, are seen as things that don’t have a sexuality – in the most extreme cases, as things that don’t have a humanity. IN a session I went to earlier in the week, asexuality was presented as a sexual orientation, a way someone relates to their own sexuality, so I use the terms desexualization or nonsexual instead. I’m hoping Meghann and Hailee will mention this in their literature review. Maybe Hahn’s term can be updated to “nonsexual objectification.” That still contrasts attitudes towards disabled people with the ways North Ameerican cultures tend to sexually objectify people.

(here’s more information on the theory of asexual objectification.

These theories usually describe the experiences of people with visible physical disabilities.

Women diagnosed with mental illness, especially bipolar disorder, are instead seen as hypersexual. “Hypersexuality” is one of the bipolar disorder symptoms listed in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual), the diagnostic tool most often used by psychiatrists and other mental health practitioners in the United States. There’s no definition of “normal” sexuality to go along with that. For that matter, there’s not really a definition of hypersexuality beyond evaluating behaviours like how many partners a patient or client has had, or how frequently they’re engaging in sexual behaviours.

So, each mental health practitioner makes their own judgments about what is normal, and how or whether their patient or clients deviate f

A 4-Year-Old Girl Asked A Lesbian If She's A Boy. She Responded The Awesomest Way Possible.

Ash Beckham is awesome. She also happens to be gay, and she thinks it's hard for straight people coming out of the closet.

This not just about being gay -- it's about the hard conversations we all face, the fact that not having those conversations is killing us, that living with any sorts of stress and fear is being closet.

Golden Bullet: Addiction Now Defined As Brain Disorder, Not Behavior Problem

Golden Bullet: Addiction Now Defined As Brain Disorder, Not Behavior Problem | Sex Positive | Scoop.it
Will the new definition mean we stop blaming addicts for their behaviors?

Via Julian Buchanan, Deanna Dahlsad
Julian Buchanan's curator insight, May 23, 2013 2:51 AM

Genetic determinism emerges once again ... Charles Darwin, Charles Murray, Sir Keith Joseph, Dr James Watson  .. and maybe they can now all support Barbara Harris who has a charity to pay drug using mothers to be sterilised - to stop the reproduction of this brain disorder?

So the poverty, inequality, abuse, unemployment, low self esteem, low achievement which feature disproportionately amongst people with patterns of problematic drug use is just a symptom?

The simple disease model of addiction really is making a worrying comeback.

Maybe people who commit crimes also have a brain disorder .... and people who display anti-social patterns of behaviour? So rampant capitalism with the obscene levels of inequality that create degenerate and hopeless environments for the poorest, excluded and disenfrachised - has not resulted in high levels of problem drug use at all - it's just that these people have got brain disorders!

Very convenient ....

A sex worker's response to columnist Mia Freedman's blog in which implied that she does not respect the right of women with mental illness to become sex workers.

A sex worker's response to columnist Mia Freedman's blog in which implied that she does not respect the right of women with mental illness to become sex workers. | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

As a sex worker who has both mental illness(es) and a history of abuse Mia Freedman’s post perpetuates stereotypes and stigmas that harm me. Should my mental illness prevent me from having any agency? Didn’t we do away with locking the mentally ill up and throwing away the key (although this still does happen) because we (as a society) started to recognise the mentally ill as humans with rights? Or do we only have some rights? Like the right to work in a low paying, menial job or the right to exist (not live because let’s face it, it isn’t a living wage) on the disability support pension and that is if you even qualify for it, if you don’t you can always try and get by on unemployment “benefits” while you are made to apply for jobs you will never get. Surely I still have the right to have sex don’t I? I can’t see Mia Freedman advocating for enforced chastity belts for the mentally ill. So, if I have the right to work and the right to have sex, what is wrong with me having sex as my work?
