Creepy & Complex Sexual Discussions Regarding David Bowie

Creepy & Complex Sexual Discussions Regarding David Bowie | Sex Positive | Scoop.it
It wasn’t until David Bowie passed that I heard about how he had slept with an underage girl.

At the age of 15, Lori Mattix was a self-described groupie in the 70s ~ a groupie who lost her virginity to David Bowie. Last November, in an interview at the Thrillist, the adult Mattix seemed fine about it. Even when Thrillist reporter Michael Kaplan pressed her about it, she seemed dreamily happy, gushing, “Who wouldn’t want to lose their virginity to David Bowie?”

Mattix’s stories of her groupie years, deflowering, and age have varied over the years ~ which is not stated here to cast doubt on her claims, but to point out that she clearly hasn’t viewed her sexual activities with Bowie (or others) to be rape or anything remotely close to it. But, as told in the Thrillist piece, Mattix was a minor and Bowie was not. So even with Mattix agreeing and desiring to have sex with Bowie, her age removes her legal ability to consent. This would make Bowie guilty, ethically if not legally, of statutory rape.

Yes, I know; we all took David Bowie’s death pretty hard. But I’m not posting this about Bowie per se…. I mean, sure, there are definitely implications and conversations we should be having regarding celebrities and abuse. And we do have some consumer power we can wield. But the real issues I am looking at in this conversation are the rights of young people to have any sexual autonomy, who decides who is victimized, and how autonomy and victimization impact one another.

Charlie Sheen Isn't the Only One You're Hurting When You Slut-Shame Him for Having HIV

Charlie Sheen Isn't the Only One You're Hurting When You Slut-Shame Him for Having HIV | Sex Positive | Scoop.it
"I'm not a fan of Charlie Sheen — he's an abusive, violent misogynist — but making jokes about how he'll need more than 'tiger blood' to survive, as some outlets have already cracked, is dehumanizing and disgusting," Dawson added. "We as a society consider people living with STIs to be amoral, dirty and dishonest. Tabloids will have a field day reinforcing that stereotype through Sheen. And the women he has been involved with will absolutely have their privacy invaded and their choices held up to scrutiny."

The stigma against sex workers: Indeed, it's Sheen's former sex worker girlfriends who are currently being smeared on social media — despite the fact that Sheen himself told Matt Lauer he's not certain how he contracted the virus.

Beware Popular Lies About Sex

Beware Popular Lies About Sex | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Not “myths,” but lies.

Katie Couric recently embarrassed herself during an interview with psychologist David Ley about pornography. When he calmly described to her what a range of scientific studies say about porn’s effects on behavior and our brain—that it’s minimal—Couric raised her voice, rolled her eyes, and said she was sick of science. “Can’t we use some common sense here?”

Actually, no. Common sense clearly tells us that the Earth is flat. Want some science with that, Ma’am?

In contrast, Couric believed the fact-less, emotional rantings of her other guest—because they fit Couric’s existing beliefs. Like all morning TV hosts, her job is to say bland things, not to think. At least Couric didn’t lie; she’s just uninterested in facts.

Some people do lie. Here are some popular lies about sex that are easy to believe because they make “common sense”—and because some people are making a lot of money and maintaining large support bases promoting these lies.

Laverne Cox flawlessly shuts down Katie Couric’s invasive questions about transgender people

Laverne Cox flawlessly shuts down Katie Couric’s invasive questions about transgender people | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

"The preoccupation with transition and surgery objectifies trans people," the actress explained to Couric

Crystel Hamilton's curator insight, January 15, 2014 3:17 PM

When Katie Couric questions Laverne Cox about her transition, Laverne positively redirects the question to something more important to her; educating the world about transgender issues.  The homicide rate is highest for trans women. If we always address the  transition, we don't focus on the other important issues.

Very amazing women!

TLD-Gender Dysphoria's curator insight, September 8, 2015 2:49 PM

That is such a brilliant point Laverne and i think very true. By reducing people parts of themselves we are dismissing the complexity and totality of the person. When "news" organizations and other media do this they are contributing to the discrimination and violence that people are experiencing.

It is not just media that does this of course and people should take responsibility for themselves however, a society where all people are more than just a sound bite or a surgery is the world we should be promoting in mass media.

Rashida Jones, We Have Bigger Problems Than Porn

Rashida Jones, We Have Bigger Problems Than Porn | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Parks and Recreation star Rashida Jones has recently been making headlines. First, with her charming rendition of holiday pop songs on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, and just the other week, with her not-so-charming Glamour article titled “Why is Everyone Getting Naked?”

...Jones insists that she wasn’t slut-shaming and that the backlash against her statements “crushed” her, since she considers herself a feminist. It’s not female sexuality she’s against, it’s the fact that this “pornification” of pop culture is “showing what it looks like when women sell sex.” “And so much of it feels staged for men,” she adds, “not for our own pleasure.”

Lily Tomlin, Jane Wagner May Get Married After 42 Years Together | Sex Positive | Scoop.it

Actress Lily Tomlin and her partner, writer Jane Wagner, may finally get married after 42 years together now that same-sex marriage is legal.

Tomlin told E! News that she and Wagner are "thinking" about getting married now that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) has been ruled unconstitutional and Proposition 8 has been struck down. The women, who met in 1971 and started dating shortly after, didn't think they would see such a milestone in their lifetime.
