Self-Compassion, Growth Mindset, and the Benefits of Failure

Two different psychological studies were published today that illuminate the importance of various age students practicing self-compassion and adopting a "growth mindset" (a term coined by Carol Dweck of Stanford University) marked by a self-belief that your intelligence is malleable and never set in stone.

The first study, from the University of British Columbia, "Don't be so hard on yourself! Changes in self-compassion during the first year of university are associated with changes in well-being," was published today in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.

The second study, from Michigan State University, "Neural evidence for enhanced attention to mistakes among school-aged children with a growth mindset," was published online today in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience.

10 Ways to Practice Self-Compassion to Minimize Your Shame and Suffering

10 Ways to Practice Self-Compassion to Minimize Your Shame and Suffering  | Personal Branding & Leadership Coaching | Scoop.it
“This is a moment of suffering. Suffering is part of life. May I be kind to myself in this moment. May I give myself the compassion I need.” ~Kristin Neff

I consider myself to be a very compassionate person, but I’ve struggled a great deal with self-compassion. Though I’ve now been sober for over six years, back when I was drinking I made a lot of mistakes, and it’s taken me a long time to have empathy and understanding for myself.

While drinking, I did and said a lot of things that made me feel ashamed and unhappy. When I drank, one of my go-to moves was giving into a sudden, intense desire to leave (or attempt to leave) a bar or party.

I'm delighted to share a guest post today from Maureen Cooper from The Path to Self-Compassion online course. Our inner critic can be very effective in making us feel inadequate and worthless. 8 Great Things That Happen When You Practice Self-Compassion

8 Great Things That Happen When You Practice Self-Compassion | Personal Branding & Leadership Coaching | Scoop.it
1. Self-compassion makes you more resilient.

Think of a time when you may not have received a promotion or a job you really wanted. Did you beat yourself up about it or ruminate over your mistakes? Chances are that’s not going to help you in the next similar situation. It’s easier to bounce back from failure when you’re kind to yourself, says self-compassion researcher and Harvard Medical School clinical psychology instructor Christopher Germer.

“Self-compassion is an important factor in emotional resilience,” Germer told The Huffington Post. “There’s just a wide range of elements it enhances when it comes to emotional wellbeing.”
