A chindogu is an unusual gadget, originally created as the solution to a particular problem, although effectively it hardly has any utility whatsoever, it’s really almost useless. The world has always been full of these gadgets...

If you’ve ever browsed the ‘discover‘ pages of crowdfunding sites, there are hundreds of useless inventions that are somehow getting funded.

Kansainväliseen maineeseen noussut japanilainen Kenji Kawakami lanseerasi lähes kolmekymmentä vuotta sitten ilmiön chindōgu, joka tarkoittaa hyödytöntä ja absurdia keksintöä. Kawagamin kirjan 101 Unuseless Japanese Inventions: The Art of Chindogu (1995) keksinnöistä moni voisi olla melkein hyödyllinen. Niitä ovat takaraivoon asennettava iso imukuppi, jonka pikakiinnitys metrovaunun seinään pitää väsyneen matkustajan pystyssä tai hammasharja, jolla saa harjattua ylä- ja alahampaat yhtaikaa. Joitain chindōgu-härpäkkeitä katsoessa nauru voi juuttua kurkkuun. Sellainen on esimerkiksi työvoiman pakkojoustavuuteen viittaava, kaulassa roikotettava puinen Anywhere office-työpöytä.  Entä miltä kuulostaa antistaattisin huiskuin varustettu potkupuku, johon puettu taapero voisi ryömiessään samalla kerätä pölypallerot nurkista?

Chindōgu is the Japanese art of inventing ingenious everyday gadgets that, on the surface, seem like an ideal solution to a particular problem. However, chindōgu has a distinctive feature: anyone actually attempting to use one of these inventions would find that it causes so many new problems, or such significant social embarrassment, that effectively it has no utility whatsoever. Thus, chindōgu are sometimes described as "unuseless" – that is, they cannot be regarded as "useless" in an absolute sense, since they do actually solve a problem; however, in practical terms, they cannot positively be called "useful".

Unuseless: “Not exactly useful, but somehow not altogether useless.” That’s the idea behind the art of Chindōgu. The term, originally coined by Kenji Kawakami, means “unusual tool,” and is a form of Japanese art. Japanese inventions are well known for their off-the-wall ingenuity (Dr. NakaMats’ Underwater Pencil and Notepad is perfect for those sudden bursts of inspiration in the shower), but Chindōgu takes the idea of bizarre inventions to a whole new level.

Chindōgu on japanilainen taidemuoto, jossa keksitään uusia jokapäiväiseen käyttöön soveltuvia esineitä, joilla ratkaistaan joku arkipäiväinen ongelma. Chindōgu ei kuitenkaan ole täydellinen ratkaisu ongelmaan, sillä vaikka se ratkaiseekin yhden ongelman, se myös aiheuttaa niin suuria uusia ongelmia tai huomattavaa julkista häpeää, että sillä ei oikeasti ole mitään käyttöä. Siksi chindōgua joskus kutsutaan "hyödyttömäksi" niksiksi, vaikka oikeampi termi olisi "käyttökelvoton", sillä chindōgusta on hyötyä.
