Miracle material graphene can distil booze, says study

Miracle material graphene can distil booze, says study | Cool Future Technologies | Scoop.it
Graphene, often described as a "miracle material", can be used to distil alcohol, according to a new study in the Science journal.

An international team created the membrane from graphene oxide - a chemical derivative of graphene.

They have shown that the membrane blocks the passage of several gases and liquids, but lets water through.

This joins a long list of fascinating and unusual properties associated with graphene and its derivatives.

Graphene is a form of carbon. It is a flat layer of carbon atoms tightly packed into a two-dimensional honeycomb arrangement.

Because it is so thin, it is also practically transparent. As a conductor of electricity, it performs as well as copper; and as a conductor of heat, it outperforms all other known materials.

The unusual electronic, mechanical and chemical properties of graphene at the molecular scale promise numerous applications.

All set and ready to glow | Cool Future Technologies | Scoop.it
A new technique that paves the way for manufacturing affordable LED light bulbs is to be exploited in the UK, in a deal that researchers say could have a dramatic impact on carbon emissions.

Researchers estimate that a worldwide switch to LEDs, which are far more energy-efficient, would enable the closure of 560 power plants and result in annual CO2 savings equivalent to the output of all the cars on the planet.

LEDs are also being designed to give off a more natural quality of light, which will be better for people’s health.

“We’ve got higher efficiency for growing gallium nitride on silicon than anyone else we know,” Humphreys said. “Potentially this is a deal that puts Britain right at the forefront of LED research.”

“LED light bulbs currently cost as much as £40, but we expect to be able to reduce that cost by a factor of five by growing on silicon.

A spider web's strength lies in more than its silk

A spider web's strength lies in more than its silk | Cool Future Technologies | Scoop.it
While researchers have long known of the incredible strength of spider silk, the robust nature of the tiny filaments cannot alone explain how webs survive multiple tears and winds that exceed hurricane strength.

The study showed that, as one might expect, when any part of a web is perturbed, the whole web reacts. Such sensitivity is what alerts a spider to the struggling of a trapped insect. However, the radial and spiral filaments each play different roles in attenuating motion, and when stresses are particularly harsh, they are sacrificed so that the entire web may survive.

"The concept of selective, localized failure for spider webs is interesting since it is a distinct departure from the structural principles that seem to be in play for many biological materials and components," adds Dennis Carter, the NSF program director for biomechanics and mechanobiology who helped support the study.

Air-powered motorcycle has arrived

Air-powered motorcycle has arrived | Cool Future Technologies | Scoop.it

Based on the geometry of a 250cc motocrosser, the O2 Pursuit prototype uses the breakthrough engine technology developed by Angelo Di Pietro of Engineair.

Benstead, a recent graduate of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), has harnessed the power that exists in the air tanks to mechanically drive the vehicle.

According to Benstead, testing of the motorcycle showed close to a quarter of an hour running time with stops at around 25-45 km/h. During stationary testing, Benstead’s team timed the speed off the back wheel, registering over 100 km/h. Preliminary testing of the prototype was limited to an indoors factory environment on a circular track.

The StreetScooter: A Crowdsourced EV That Disrupts The Auto Industry's Production Models

The StreetScooter: A Crowdsourced EV That Disrupts The Auto Industry's Production Models | Cool Future Technologies | Scoop.it
Designed and manufactured in a collaboration by more than 50 companies, the StreetScooter (which isn't actually a scooter) may show a new way of engineering and producing cutting edge vehicles.

A couple of things up front about the StreetScooter. First, it isn’t actually a “scooter” (see picture). It’s a German-made electric car with a range of about 80 miles, a price tag of about $6,000, and a top speed of 74 mph. Second: tThe most important thing about it isn’t its range, speed, or price (though it’s a lot cheaper than comparable models).

What’s special is how it was developed. More than 50 companies took part in the StreetScooter’s design and engineering, co-creating, and collaborating from scratch. Not a single large brand was involved, and many were small- and medium-sized firms. The process effectively turns traditional car development on its head. Instead of one manufacturer dictating its designs to suppliers, all the companies had equal status, and could provide input.

Intel packs performance and reliability into its latest Solid State Drives

Intel packs performance and reliability into its latest Solid State Drives | Cool Future Technologies | Scoop.it
Intel Corporation announced today its fastest, most robust client/consumer solid-state drive (SSD) to date, the Intel Solid-State Drive 520 Series (Intel SSD 520), a 6 gigabit-per-second (gbps) SATA III SSD produced using Intel compute-quality...

...25-nanometer (nm) NAND memory process technology. Aimed at delivering world-class performance for even the most demanding PC enthusiasts, gamers, professionals or small-medium businesses (SMBs), the Intel SSD 520 has fast throughput performance, new security features and unmatched reliability to meet even the most intensive user requirements.

Unlike a traditional hard disk drive (HDD) with spinning disks and moveable parts, an SSD is based on silicon, NAND flash memory specifically, to create a lower power, more reliable and drastically faster storage solution that can keep up with today's most demanding applications, Internet streaming and intense multi-tasking.

Sepp Hasslberger's comment, February 11, 2012 4:52 AM
Hitachi has just incorporated these new SSD units into their drives and they have - for server use - drives of 100, 200 and 400 GB now.
Robin Good's comment, February 11, 2012 5:35 AM
Sepp, hardly any news at all. SSDs have been available for several years inside all kinds of PCs and Macs. Your own MacBook Pro has offered a version with SSDs since a few years now, and anyone can swap his Mac hd for an SSD on the Apple Store. The MacBook Air has offered a native SSD version of its unit since its inception.

So, from my viewpoint, the only relevant news would have to be about capacity and cost, because these have been the real limitations for wider adoption.

I respect your interest for these technologies, but as an avid reader of your great news picks, I can't avoid voicing my little disappointment for this one. The story contains little valuable info and quite a bit of marketing stuff (....Aimed at delivering world-class performance for even the most demanding PC enthusiasts, gamers, professionals or small-medium businesses (SMBs), the Intel SSD 520 has fast throughput performance, new security features and unmatched reliability to meet even the most intensive user requirements....) which is of very little use to me as a reader.

Keep up the "good" work!

New style turbine to harvest wind energy

New style turbine to harvest wind energy | Cool Future Technologies | Scoop.it
Nottingham, UK (SPX) Feb 01, 2012 - A new way of generating wind energy which could see smaller, more efficient turbines on the landscape is being developed by a Derbyshire inventor with support from Nottingham Trent University.

Traditional wind turbines typically have three blades which rotate around a horizontal hub at the top of a steel tower. Most generate maximum output at an approximate wind speed of 30mph and shut down to prevent storm damage at 50mph or above, causing reduced efficiency of some turbines.

The new Wind Harvester is based on a reciprocating motion that uses horizontal aerofoils similar to those used on aeroplanes. It is virtually noise-free and can generate electricity at a low speed, which may result in less opposition to new installations. It will also be operational at higher wind speeds than current wind turbines.

Flying Cars | Future Flying Cars

Flying Cars | Future Flying Cars | Cool Future Technologies | Scoop.it
Read about the latest future flying cars including reviews on the the Moller Skycar, the Transition, the Aerospace and more.

A flying car is both street legal on the ground and FAA compliant in the air. Sounds simple enough doesn't it? It would be if it weren't for those pesky wings. If you thought it was a pain to open up a Targa top, imagine how awkward it would be to remove a couple of wings. Automated collapsible wings would be the user-friendly solution to the problem, but how to accomplish this without compromising wing stability or driver safety?

Ultimately, flying cars are a fantastic idea that no one has quite figured out. And even if someone creates a viable model, who is going to buy one? A pilot's license requires a significant investment of time and money. Planes and helicopters are also expensive to maintain. Yearly inspections and regular overhauls are mandatory because, well, blowing a head gasket at 10,000 feet is a sigificant problem.

Despite the obstacles, the flying car is still a popular idea and several companies are pushing ahead with the dream.

NASA Admits Low Energy Nuclear Reaction (Cold Fusion) is a Game Changing Technology! | Cool Future Technologies | Scoop.it
NASA's Technology Gateway has posted a two-minute video that summarizes
the emerging LENR field and the hope it brings for a world of clean,
affordable energy.

Dr. Zawodny: "The easiest implementation of this would be for the home. You would have a unit that would replace your water heater. And you would have some sort of cycle to derive electrical energy from that. And then it would dump its waste heat into the water or air handing system for the building. So it would be a dual use thing. It would be sitting there producing heat; [and] you'd drive electricity from it to run your electronics, power the house, power the building, power the lights. And then the waste heat would be used for environmental control [e.g. heat pump / air conditioning] and warm water."

Lit Motors' C-1 electric motorcycle will stand up for itself | Cool Future Technologies | Scoop.it
The C-1 is a proposed fully-electric and fully-enclosed self-balancing motorcycle.

As any avid biker will tell you, motorcycles have a lot of advantages over cars - they use less fuel, accelerate faster, are more maneuverable, can be parked in more places, and don't incorporate the weight of extra seating for passengers who are non-existent on solo commutes. As many other people will tell you, however, motorcycles also leave their occupants open to the rain and cold, and can potentially tip over and scatter those occupants across the road. That's where Lit Motors' C-1 comes into the picture. It's a proposed fully-enclosed two-passenger electric motorbike that uses an electronically-controlled gyroscopic stabilizing system to stay upright when stopped, or even when struck from the side in an accident.

Stacy Mata's curator insight, March 13, 2016 3:26 PM
This is amazing to see citizens take action as a community to seemingly desolate and dead place into a living, sustainable community. The buildings were intentionally renovated by the community so they have a personal connection and responsibility to it and to each other as a community. Also they exemplify a low cost model for an eco-community.
