There is no shortage of material that needs to be read in business including marketing copy, business plans, contracts legal documents and of course business books. I love to read but not all business reading is particularly entertaining or well written. And some of the most important stuff is dense, dry and dreadful no matter how much achieving success requires you read it.
So when my inbox is full of necessary reading that I know will put me to sleep, I have to make a special effort to power through it. First, I set aside time with no distractions. No phone, email or TV to draw my focus. Then I find a place with lots of natural light. Lastly I turn on mellow music that I know well so I can get into rhythmic groove. Before you know it the stack is gone and I feel better for having been productive.
Here are more ways to tackle that tough material from my Inc. colleagues.
Business is full of dry boring material that needs your attention. Here Inc. columnists share ways to get through the drudgery.

It seems like a lot of bloggers and mainstream media publications are talking about JC Penney's #TweetingWithMittens stunt on Twitter. Most are saying that it was a misstep. As they complain about it, they fall into the trap perfectly. It's being talked about by journalists, Twitter users, and even other companies trying to get their own clever Tweets into the mix. The jokes on all of them. This campaign worked beautifully. When you consider that they didn't spend millions of dollars to advertise during the Super Bowl and are being talked about as if they had, the ROI is very apparent.

Ever wonder if your Facebook ads are performing better or worse than the industry standard for ROI – searching for some Facebook benchmarking data? What is the average CPM, CTR, CPC, the average cost per like, or average page like rate for your industry or business?
This graphic is based on data from Social.com’s study of 1 million ad units and over 114 billion impressions from January 1st to March 31st, 2013. The report analyzed the top 25 countries globally and top five countries per region based on impressions. All rates were converted to U.S. dollars using the average daily conversion rates during the reporting period.
You can use this data in many different ways – one of which is determining ROI of your Facebook Campaign to determine if social media is worth the ROI for your business.
How your ads rank on Facebook could have countless other reasons why it performs better or worse, ie - timing, image quality, messaging, target market, etc. Test on a relative basis with multiple ads.

Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn can be found in the majority of social media management apps. It is with Google+ that things get a little bit more complicated: very few social media tools support it due to some technical challenges.
However, most social media managers would prefer a solution that would allow them posting to all social networks in one place, Google+ including.
In this post, you’ll find reference to all tools that are to date integrated with Google+. We’ll bring small business editions to a special focus and review social tools that (1) support Google+ and (2) the ones you can use for free or under $10 a month.
I see there are a couple of tools I may have to test again as they have made some changes to what their tool could do.

A recent study revealed that almost half of companies are not monitoring their online social media communities.
More than one-third said that they only measure Likes, comments and interactions on Facebook, with fewer than one in four actively measuring the ROI of their social media campaigns.
Social media affects your bottom line; brands that are proactively using these tools see numerous benefits. And for those that aren’t, the absence of social media can also impact their bottom lines, albeit in a very different way.
This infographic takes a closer look at why the shift to in-depth social media monitoring is critical for the modern business.
This article looks at how we have almost become lazy with our sampling methods. For example when we look up keyword searches like a brand name, it is more effective to look at the whole conversation. Another common metric we use is using sample sets of data, although there is so much data it would be impossible to look at every single piece of data, it is important to set a sample size big enough so that the data has minimal outliers. For example a sample size of 10 might give you a totally different picture than a sample size of 100.
What is not talked about in this article that was touched on in class was the idea of getting the whole picture. For example with software they may be using keywords like they say in the article but it may not have the typical connotation when read in context of the statement.

It’s superficial, of course, but large numbers of followers on Twitter and Likes on your Facebook Page do have provide a level of social proof that makes you more attractive to new followers, and new Likes – when someone sees that you’re already popular, they’re far more likely to make the leap and get on board themselves.
