Chitown solar street lights vandalised

Chitown solar street lights vandalised | LIGHTING-Innovation-Design | Scoop.it
7 November 2018 A hole left where the batteries powering traffic lights were stolen CHITUNGWIZA’S solar street lights, which were erected recently at corner VID-Seke Road, were vandalised with thieves stealing batteries. The lights unit is no longer working leaving the intersection prone to accidents The thieves dug into the ground where the batteries are placed and went away with the batteries. “Solarlux, the company which placed the traffic lights at the intersection, over the weekend confirmed the news to H-Metro saying their efforts for modern traffic lights had been derailed by thieves. “Each of the batteries costs around $700 and they are long-life batteries providing lighting in all weather,” said Tinashe Chimwadze of Solarlux. Chimwadze said the lights were vandalised on Thursday. “Pedestrians are now afraid to use that part of the road at night because there is no more lighting. “This is a serious dent to efforts of development in Chitungwiza. “We have been making efforts to ensure that we get better standards but then comes this,” said Chimwadze. Chimwadze said they were on a drive to use solar in lighting Chitungwiza but these hindrances are not helping.
