Building Desktop Apps with Ember and Node-Webkit

Building Desktop Apps with Ember and Node-Webkit | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

The desktop app was written using the same technologies that power our Web IDE — namely, Ember.js and HTML5. This not only allowed us to reuse code from our Web IDE, but also to have one code-base that works on both Windows and Mac.

Yesterday, at Ember’s monthly meetup in San Francisco, we shared some of the insights we gained from building our desktop application with Ember.js and Node-webkit.

Dart and Web Components - Scalable, Structured Web Apps

Dart and Web Components - Scalable, Structured Web Apps | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Like chocolate and peanut butter, Dart and Web Components go great together. Learn how to build structured, declarative apps with modern web platform features, and deploy them across the modern web today. Don't wait for all browsers to implement the great new Web Components specs, let Dart and its Web UI framework make it a reality today.

Dart's language features such as classes, static types, and libraries brings order and scalability to the chaos. Web Components' features such as encapsulation, reusability, and declarative semantics helps you "say what you mean" and avoid soup. Web UI's declarative and dynamic two-way data binding efficiently wires up your app.

Best part: it all compiles to vanilla HTML and JavaScript to bring you the best of the future web today so you can deploy access the modern web browsers.

JavaScript Framework Face Off

JavaScript Framework Face Off | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

With so many JavaScript MVC libraries out there, how does a time constrained developer make a smart choice? In this survey, we'll compare and contrast some of today's most popular libraries.

Developers are flocking to client side frameworks and, as a result, there are more and more JavaScript libraries attempting to solve the rich internet application problem. In a space where new libraries seem to spring up weekly, what framework should you choose for your next project? While there is consensus around basic ideas like Model View Whatever, there are some strong philosophical differences amongst the various libraries. In this talk, we'll look at the similarities and the differences of some emerging JavaScript libraries discussing why you need to be aware of this rapidly evolving aspect of software development.

* Ember.js

* Backbone.js

* Knockout.js

Emily Stark: Meteor - A Full Stack Framework For Building Pure JavaScript Apps

"Meteor is an open-source full-stack framework for building modern web applications. Apps written in this style -- like Google Plus and the photo browser in Facebook -- have rich and engaging interfaces because they send data over the network instead of HTML and run most of their code inside the browser. Meteor makes it possible to write applications this way in a fraction of the time, using a single language and unified API for all of your code. In this talk, I will live code a Meteor app from scratch, and dive into how some of Meteor's advanced features work under the hood, including reactivity, publications, subscriptions, and latency compensation."

How to (semi-)automate JavaScript refactoring

How to (semi-)automate JavaScript refactoring | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Computers aren’t ready to write much of our code for us, but they can still help us clean and improve our code.
Giles Bowkett demonstrates a wide variety of ways to write code that helps refactor code, showing developers a variety of ways to clean up and simplify their JavaScript. He gives ‘disposable robot assassin at large’ as his title, but it fit better with the code he is demonstrating.
Bowkett explores many options and iterations of his automation ideas...
It’s an amazing mix of capabilities that let you build your own robot (code) assassins.

WebApp to DesktopApp with Node-Webkit

WebApp to DesktopApp with Node-Webkit | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Node-Webkit combines a Chromium runtime environment with node.js to provide an easy way to create a Desktop App with Web technologies. While it is easy to run local apps in a browser, necessary security restrictions prohibitaccess to local file systems. In addition, variations in browsers complicate web apps and can make the result unpredictable.

Node-Webkit provides a standalone executable for Mac, Windows or Linux, with consistent behavior on all platforms and more control over the user experience, while enabling the use of node.js features and libraries.

My presentation will include an overview of Node-Webkit, an explanation of how to use it, and a demonstration of an example app built with Node-Webkit.
