Well done LG Electronics

Build fast, fix later: speed hurts quality at Tesla, some workers say

Build fast, fix later: speed hurts quality at Tesla, some workers say | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
After Tesla's Model S sedans and Model X SUVs roll off the company's Fremont, California assembly line, the electric vehicles usually make another stop - for repairs, nine current and former employees have told Reuters.

Via TechinBiz
Richard Platt's insight:

The luxury cars regularly require fixes before they can leave the factory, according to the workers. Quality checks have routinely revealed defects in more than 90 percent of Model S and Model X vehicles inspected after assembly, these individuals said, citing figures from Tesla’s internal tracking system as recently as October. Some of these people told Reuters of seeing problems as far back as 2012.   Tesla said its quality control process is unusually rigorous, designed to flag and correct the tiniest imperfections. It declined to provide post-assembly defect rates to Reuters or comment on those cited by employees.  The world’s most efficient automakers, such as Toyota, average post-manufacturing fixes on fewer than 10 percent of their cars, according to industry experts. Getting quality right during initial assembly is crucial, they said, because repairs waste time and money.  At Tesla “so much goes into rework after the car is done ... that’s where their money is being spent,” a former Tesla supervisor said.  The Silicon Valley automaker said the majority of its post-assembly defects are minor and resolved in a matter of minutes.

With a $1,000 Price Tag, Apple’s iPhone Crosses a Threshold

With a $1,000 Price Tag, Apple’s iPhone Crosses a Threshold | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Apple will unveil a luxury iPhone on Tuesday that will feature innovations like facial recognition, but its price could be an issue in global markets.

Via TechinBiz
Richard Platt's insight:

From the iPhone’s introduction a decade ago, Apple has always priced it as a premium product — a more refined and polished alternative to the legions of cheaper smartphones available in the market.  But this time, the company is pushing into luxury territory. The new phone will cost as much as the company’s entry-level MacBook Air laptop. “They’re doubling down on their strategy: They are going much more to the high end,” Ms. Ruth said.  Apple declined to comment before the product announcements scheduled for Tuesday. (On Saturday, Steven Troughton-Smith, a developer who combed through the iOS 11 software, found references indicating that the new high-end phone will be called the iPhone X.)   Investors are betting that Apple’s move up the price ladder will pay off with much higher profits, especially in mature markets like the United States and Western Europe, where many of the buyers will be people upgrading from older iPhones. The company’s stock has risen by nearly 50 percent over the past year as anticipation has built about the 2017 models.

Three New iPhones To Rescue Disappointing iPhone X

Three New iPhones To Rescue Disappointing iPhone X | Internet of Things - Company and Research Focus | Scoop.it
Will Apple’s three new iPhone models reverse the falling sales figures of its smartphones in 2018?

Via TechinBiz
Richard Platt's insight:

The latest examination of Apple’s iPhone portfolio and the chances of its future success comes from RBC Capital Markets analyst Amit Daryanani. His latest research note (reported on by BGR) reinforces the idea of three new models coming to Cupertino’s portfolio this year.  One of them will be an update to the iPhone X. The presumptively named iPhone X2 will continue the physical size and form factor of the iPhone X as Apple continues to push the bezel-reduced full screen design with the contentious notch.  The second model will be the equivalent of an iPhone X Plus, carrying forward the design cues of the 2018 flagship but in a larger screen that pushes the notch design into the phablet space. Finally, the third model would retain the LED screen technology of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, but within a 6.1 inch screened device. That makes it awkward to carry the iPhone SE designation, so we could be looking at variously the iPhone X SE, the iPhone 9, or perhaps even just ‘iPhone’.

Richard Platt's insight:

The current Apple TV is nearly two years old. That’s why it’s not surprising to learn that Apple has been working on a new device for a while. This weekend, an upcoming build of iOS 11 for the next iPhone was leaked and contains a ton of information about unreleased products, including the next Apple TV.  A previous leak of the HomePod firmware already indicated that Apple was working on an Apple TV with 4K video support. The new device could also support various high-dynamic range standards, such as Dolby Vision, HDR10 and Hybrid Log-Gamma. The company could announce 4K videos on the iTunes Store as well as in the Netflix app.  And now, Steve Troughton-Smith discovered some of the technical specs of the next Apple TV. According to him, the media player is going to receive a major performance gain with a lot more computing power and RAM:
