Ingeborg Bachmann: Journey into the desert - Margarethe Von Trotta | Bozar Brussels

Ingeborg Bachmann: Journey into the desert - Margarethe Von Trotta | Bozar Brussels | Gender and Literature | Scoop.it

Bozar welcomes you to the Belgian première of director Margarethe Von Trotta’s most recent film. As one of the ‘leading forces’ of the New German Cinema movement, all of her movies focus on courageous female characters, involved in arts, politics and/or philosophy. Her last movie is the portrait of the Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann, interpreted by Vicky Krieps.

The remarkable and charismatic Ingeborg Bachmann has conquered the male dominated bastion of German-language literature with her poetry. Though still young, Ingeborg Bachmann is at the peak of her career when she meets the famous playwright Max Frisch. Their love is passionate but professional, and personal friction begins to disrupt the harmony. Struggling with herself, she travels to the desert together with her friends Hans Werner Henze and the young Adolf Opel. On this journey she finds a way back to her writing and to herself.

Meet the writer : Iman Mersal & Adania Shibli | Bozar Brussels | Gender and Literature | Scoop.it

Language exists not only in words, but also in silence and time. This is all the more palpable in the case of writers who do not live in their home country, but live in a language other than the language of their books. Iman Mersal from Egypt lives in Canada, Adania Shibli from Palestine in Germany; both write in Arabic. What does that mean for their writing? Mersal and Shibli discuss the relationship between language and being at home, silence and time. They also commemorate the legendary Palestinian writer Edward Said, known for works such as Orientalism and Out of Place, who passed away 20 years ago this autumn.

L'édition a beau se féminiser, les inégalités demeurent

L'édition a beau se féminiser, les inégalités demeurent | Gender and Literature | Scoop.it

5 Things We Learned From the NYPL’s Virginia Woolf Exhibition

5 Things We Learned From the NYPL’s Virginia Woolf Exhibition | Gender and Literature | Scoop.it

Anyone with a passable grasp of the 20th-century literary landscape can probably spout off a handful of facts about Virginia Woolf. Her novels include To the Lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway. She’s known for her stream-of-consciousness writing style. Her relationship with Vita Sackville-West defied gender expectations. She died by suicide.

That’s how it often goes with iconic authors; they get distilled into easily digestible beats and buzzwords, their personhood more or less eclipsed by what they wrote and represented. But what was Virginia Woolf really like? How did she spend her time when she wasn’t penning era-defining fiction? How did her private writing differ from her published works, and how can examining that distinction deepen our understanding of the latter?

The exhibition 'Virginia Woolf : A Modern Mind' at the New York Public Library has closed.

A digitized version of the exhibition can be found on

"On se souvient d’elle pour un seul livre, Du côté des petites filles, qui fut aussi son premier, publié en France en 1974 par les Éditions des femmes qui en tira 250 000 exemplaires. Disparue le 24 décembre 2022, à l’âge de 93 ans, Elena Gianini Belotti reste largement à découvrir."
