"Social Media, Social Life: How Teens View Their Digital Lives is the latest research report from Common Sense Media's Program for the Study of Children and Media. We surveyed over 1,000 13- to 17-year-olds nationally to understand how they perceive social media (like Facebook and Twitter) affects their relationships and feelings about themselves."

What we found is that students, teachers and parents agree that technology is critical to learning, but have differing opinions about how best to use it in the classroom." Being that I was bought up in an era that had just introduced great technology, social media was not as heavily popular when I was in grade school. Therefore, I've always been curious about the role of social media in education. This is a great read.

Amanda Lenhart spoke to the “Media and the Well-Being of Children and Adolescents” conference at the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pen... Amanda focused on bringing together data that highlights the demographic differences among groups of youth in their adoption, use and experiences with technology and social media. While such data may have illustrated what was called a “digital divide” in the past, it now highlights a variety of digital differences among groups of youth. This talk brings together data previously shared in a variety of reports on youth as well as some new analysis.

That’s according to the most recent Speak Up 2011 report, “Mapping a Personalized Learning Journey,” which reflects the views of more than 416,000 K-12 students, parents, and educators nationwide surveyed on how technology can enhance the learning environment..."

While large-scale surveys have documented the types of media to which 5–9-year-olds are devoting increasing amounts of time, we know less about how and why they are using these media and what they might be learning as a result. This research provides rich details on the processes, relationships, and contexts that larger scale studies on children’s media use cannot by examining two 8-year-old girls’ engagement with video games, the Web, mobile devices, and other emerging technologies against the backdrop of family life.

"For the vast majority of teens, social and other digital communications media are a daily part of life."
Again, this statistic report shows the popularity of public profiling among teens from 13-17 years. 91% of teens have experience using social media, and 51% of teens use a social networking site daily. With such statistics we can consider the social pressures and influence that virtual communication and public profiling has on the younger generation. Though this article doesn't look at the positives and negatives of social media interaction for this particular age group, it is clear to see that having an active public profile on the web is common, if not expected of the younger generation, for the purpose of communication and web literacy.
In understanding how a younger generation operates and interprets public profiling, is to gain a better understanding of web systems, their function and purpose, and of the direction of today's society.
