Stratasys 3D Printed Model using FDM and Inkjet Technologies!

"This card and pen holder was created to illustrate the range of possibilities using Stratasys' different 3D printing technologies. One half of the model is created using FDM technology in ABSi material - strong, light, durable and suitable for real production requirements. The second part is created using Inkjet multi-material jetting technology which deposits 2 photopolymer-based materials at the same time and mimics the precise look and feel of more complex end products. This part features extremely smooth surfaces, fine details and embedded writing in a separate material. Together, using both FDM and Inkjet technology, designers and manufacturers can cover the entire gamut of Fit, Form and Functional Prototyping and Rapid Manufacturing requirements!"

Don’t Understand The 3D Printed Gun Controversy? Watch This Documentary | DIY | Maker | Scoop.it

3D printed guns were viewed as more or less a curiosity when they first started to gain mainstream exposure last year. It wasn’t until the tragedies at Aurora and Sandy Hook that 3D printed firearms became a full blown controversy with gun control advocates calling for therenewal of the Undetectable Firearms Act, and opponents, namely Defense Distributed, pushing the boundaries of 3D printed weaponry.

3D Printing Revolution: the Complex Reality

3D Printing Revolution: the Complex Reality | DIY | Maker | Scoop.it

In the past couple of years, the concept of low-cost 3D printing has captured the hearts and minds of millions of geeks. The allure of an upcoming manufacturing revolution has seeped into the mainstream, too: take The Economist, which ran about two dozen articles about this technology within the last year alone. Something must be in the air!
The charm of 3D printing is easy to understand, especially as it coincides with the renaissance of the DIY movement on the Internet. But all this positive buzz also has an interesting downside: it makes it easy to overlook that the most significant barriers to home manufacturing run very deep, and probably won’t be affected just by the arrival of a new generation of tools.

Two years ago, a Dutch student named Dirk Vander Kooij was designing furniture and preparing for his graduation project when he was inspired by an old 3D printer. So he got his hands on an industrial robot from a Chinese production line and reprogrammed it into a 3D printer to print furniture using recycled materials from old refrigerators. Will the future be printed in 3-D?

At first glance, looking at past predictions about the future of technology, prognosticators got a whole lot wrong. The Web is a garbage dump of inaccurate guesses about the year 2000, 2010 and beyond. Flying cars, robotic maids and jet packs still are nowhere near a reality.
