BIM for Buildings Visualization and Presentation

BIM for Buildings Visualization and Presentation | Tecnologie Emergenti nel Settore Sanitario: | Scoop.it
Architectural visualization serves many critical functions to convey aesthetics, mass, function, and meaning of the architect’s conceptual or final design, in relation to the owner’s requirements and intent for the new structure. Today’s visualization techniques stem from the history of model making (scaled replicas) which predates the Grecian and Roman empires. Ancient rulers utilized rapid expansion and grand architecture to demonstrate the empire’s power and expanding dominion. The art and science of visually representing a proposed structure continue to thrive today as an art form and as a technical subset of architectural design. Architectural visualization services and techniques have developed into a distinct and thriving sub-market of the AEC industry. The architect or land developer’s vision can be expressed and experienced through a number of visually stunning technologies: 3D architectural renderings with true-to-life materials representation 3D stylized renderings to evoke a mood, tell a story or elicit a response 3D animations which add scenic motion such as flyovers or walk-through Computerized simulations of sun lighting or material properties Panoramic views to create a stunning 360-degree experience of proposed property ‘Old-School’ computer-generated pen-and-ink with watercolor rendering 3D BIM Technology and Visualization Techniques Architectural visualization techniques are no longer constrained to client presentations and public approval forums. All of the above-mentioned end-use visualisation techniques will generate rather stunning computer-generated imagery, but the true power of visual technology is unleashed when mated with 3D BIM technology. 3D visualisation is the end result of powerful graphical software tools that are used to render traditional architectural drafting elements to simulate real-world, man-made materials and natural textures; or artistically modified versions of the same. When mated with 3D BIM technology, the underlying materials data input means a steel beam that is visually represented – will behave as a steel beam for the purpose of structural analysis, cost estimations, advanced bill-of-materials, and automated construction and erection sequencing. In a recent study labeled ‘The Status of BIM Adoption on Six Continents’ has rated the overall BIM-application levels (internationally) as follows: 3D Coordination – 85.0% Cost Estimation – 75.0% Existing Conditions Modeling – 74.3% Design Authoring – 63.4% Structural Analysis – 60.0% Maintenance Scheduling – 30.1% Building System Analysis – 33.4% From these statistics, the use of visualisation applications are not clearly evident – but in most of these distinct areas the marriage between 3D BIM technology and advanced visualisation techniques work hand-in-hand to generate a complete picture and performance model from building energy systems analysis – to structural and systems engineering – to construction planning and execution – and finally to facilities maintenance and energy conservation. Five Visualisation Applications for 3D BIM Modeling 3D Design Collaboration – Traditionally, the design process would commence from a two-dimensional layout of structural elements, followed by architectural and MEP disciplines which sequentially build the desired structure. Each discipline relies on reserved space that is allocated for systems and structures, and final coordination checks are implemented to maintain minimum clearances per building codes. 3D BIM removes several steps in the design process, making systems coordination an integral part of the engineering and design process The BIM model not only represents a data capture of building elements, but also a data representation (or visualization) of the entire project. BIMs for visualisation are increasing in use as an effective collaboration tool. A comprehensive BIM solar shading analysis to determine building orientation or photovoltaic system location is complete with visualisation techniques which demonstrate actual sun and shade characteristics at any time of day. BIM projects that utilize advanced Visualisation techniques within the BIM framework can expect higher resolution and photorealistic graphics. The result is the ability to visualise building complexities in an interactive 3D application. Presentation Methods of BIM for Buildings Interior models are created to add vibrancy and display function to all types of architectural projects from residential, retail/commercial and public projects. Even before the services of an interior designer are engaged, it is becoming customary, for the sake of client presentations, to produce a 3d interior modeling of the project. In the initial steps, a model of the desired room, entire floor space or an cross sectional view is created with specialized 3D software which will enable a CAD technician to assign surface and floor finishes that match the architect’s intentions. In addition, the appropriate furnishings, cabinetry, fixtures and appliances are also modeled in 3D. This is where the creative use of libraries of existing items are selected to build a scene. With the use of scale, color and texture, the interior model begins to display the intended ambiance or utilization functions of the areas. Next, the interior scene is given an atmospheric effect by using light and shadow to create a visually stunning experience that can evoke a sense of relaxation or productivity. Finally, the entire project goes through a final rendering, where reflections are cast, textures are tweaked, detail is enhanced and subtle color enhancements are added. If required, post production work can include animation of the scene or creating exciting walk-through scenarios. Mastering the art of creative 3d interior modeling combines science, technology and artistic insight to project a true quality rendition of the proposed project. Expect increased sales in real estate and greater industry recognition for architectural firms who take the time to present projects utilizing this cutting-edge technology. Computer animation is a niche field. It requires special skills, tools, and, techniques that are costly and time-consuming to obtain. This fact makes outsourcing your animation needs a great choice. Here are 5 benefits to outsourcing animation. Reduced Training/Hiring Cost No need to hire a full-time animator. You won’t even have to train anyone. You’ll find that outsourcing your animation needs will always cost less than hiring a dedicated animator or paying to train existing employees. Quality Work Don’t settle for an intern or ask Joe from accounting to animate your next project. Outsourcing your animation means you are hiring the best in the industry. These professional animators will always provide top-notch work. Better Use of Resources Don’t pay your employees to do work that they are not qualified to do. Let your employees do their job and allow them to specialize. Outsourcing your animation lets your employees do their best work while the animators do theirs. Cutting Edge Technology As animation professionals, your outsourcing team will be using the industry standards in software and best practices. Your animation will be sleek, modern, professional, and, evergreen. Competitive Advantage Either your competition is outsourcing or they are not. If they are, you risk getting left behind as they begin producing quality animations at a reduced cost. If they are not outsourcing, now is your chance to get a competitive advantage.

Moving Beyond BIM

Infrastructure projects involve many collaborating disciplines where work is very interconnected, with distributed teams and thousands of asynchronous decisions and changes for design, material choices, aesthetics, structural integrity, safety, and more. If constant and unrelenting change characterizes infrastructure projects, then it would seem self-evident that our systems should be designed at the outset to manage change.
We need a new paradigm for managing change — a better solution for synchronizing work in infrastructure projects. If we wish to transform the loose collection of heterogeneous engineering files and documents into a truly reliable, reusable, and scalable database, we need to fundamentally rethink:
Alignment Database queries and analytics only work when the database contains consistent units, semantics, and structure.
Accountability In infrastructure projects, change is the only constant. Change must be a first-order concept, not an unwelcome inconvenience.
Accessibility Any authorized user or program that can benefit from the information in the database should be able to easily access the information without impacting other users.

What We Like This Week: Interviews with Innovators | In the Fold | Tecnologie Emergenti nel Settore Sanitario: | Scoop.it

By Mouncey Ferguson People who say talk is cheap must be talking to the wrong folks. This week, we’re featuring mind-expanding conversations with people shaping how we make our built world. Redefining architecture. Biology, computer science, materials innovation, and architecture come together in the work of the experimental consultancy The Living. Founder David Benjamin sat down with Architect Magazine to talk about his systems-based approach and where he thinks the field is headed. Engineering empathy. Our own VP of Engineering Practice, Minette Norman, talked to ZDNet about how she’s transforming the engineering culture at Autodesk to make it more open, collaborative, and, yes, even empathetic. And there’s video, too. “The number 1 thing that I have been driving over the last 3 years at this job is: what is the culture of engineering at Autodesk? How do we break down the barriers and silos that we built up over 35 years, actually start to work together…, and create cohesive software that our customers will love?” – Minette Norman, VP of Engineering Practice, Autodesk Organically digital. Hans Neubert—former CCO of Frog Design and Huge Inc.—talks to FastCo about his latest role, where he’s leading a new Digital Experiences team at the global architectural firm Gensler. His task? The harmonious integration of the digital and the physical in every structure they make. Digital from the drop. The whole BIM thing—it really does make a difference. Ask Andy Leek of St. Louis-based construction firm PARIC. He explains to Engineering.com how they’ve boosted efficiency, reduced clashes and change orders, and streamlined collaboration since going digital every step of the way. “The AEC industry for the longest time didn’t have all the tools that we really needed in an integrated [technology] platform. Autodesk has provided the platform not only for us as end users that can benefit from the common platform, but also for the market at large to develop tools based on that infrastructure.” – Andy Leek, Director of Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) at PARIC

Three Countries Collaborate on African Engineering School - Educpros

Three Countries Collaborate on African Engineering School - Educpros | Tecnologie Emergenti nel Settore Sanitario: | Scoop.it
0 The Republic of Congo and its port city on the Atlantic, Pointe-Noire, have largely oil-based economies. Since 2002, Pointe-Noire has also been home to the UCAC-ICAM Institute, a branch of France’s ICAM School of Engineering that trains young Africans to meet their countries’ industrial needs. Oil company Total loaned the original facilities and UCAC-ICAM recently unveiled a new campus worth over €4 million. It was funded in part by a loan from the French Development Agency (AFD) and by business partners, including Total. Where The UCAC-ICAM Institute was born in 2002 after the Catholic University of Central Africa (UCAC) asked ICAM for help starting an engineering school in the region. Two years later, a second campus opened in Douala, Cameroun. Since then, roughly 600 engineers have graduated. Two years in Pointe-Noire earn students a technician’s degree and three more in Doula earn them an engineering degree. For ICAM general director Jean-Michel Viot, “The goal is for these young people to work in their countries.” The oil, construction, agri-food, logistics, energy and telecommunications industries all need technicians and engineers. Who UCAC-ICAM aims to double its combined student body to reach 1,000. Regarding admissions, Viot notes, “It’s hard to verify the quality of applications here so we decided to hold an entrance exam.” Every year, 400 applicants from the Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Chad, the CAR and Gabon compete for 60 spots. The school’s approximately €3,000 tuition is half as expensive as ICAM’s in France. Though that’s a large sum for poor, developing countries, UCAC-ICAM’s deputy director Yolande Moumpala explains, “Our graduates earn starting salaries of around €7,600. Students can also get loans with low-interest rates of around 4% in Africa, thanks to our partnership with the French bank Société Générale.” How One challenge has been explaining the French work-study model, which is new to Africa. Multinationals from French-speaking countries have helped. The internet connection in Pointe-Noire has been another challenge, hence the engineering campus in Cameroon. UCAC-ICAM was designed to be multicultural. Moumpala observes, “At first, there is some prejudice but students get to know each other quickly. In a few weeks, there’s a real cultural mix.” After its success in Africa and India, ICAM is considering exporting the model to Brazil. Back to Basics: Francesca Pasquali’s Rural Studio by Ciclostile Architettura

Back to Basics: Francesca Pasquali’s Rural Studio by Ciclostile Architettura | Tecnologie Emergenti nel Settore Sanitario: | Scoop.it
DETAILED INFORMATION Project Name FPA / FRANCESCA PASQUALI ARCHIVE Posted in RESIDENTIAL, WORKSPACE, DESIGN, INTERIOR DESIGN Location BOLOGNA ITALY Project Team CICLOSTILE ARCHITETTURA Area (sqm) 250 Completed 2017 Although Italian artist Francesca Pasquali works with all sorts of dispensable, mass produced materials, from cobweb dusters and plastic cups to elastic bands and plastic straws, her work has an organic quality often resembling natural formations, so choosing the rolling hills of the Emilia countryside outside Bologna for the location of her new studio makes perfect sense. Occupying a 1960s barn, renovated by Bologna practice Ciclostile Architettura, the artist’s studio is both a place of seclusion and sobriety where creativity can flourish undisturbed and a place of communion with the surrounding nature where inspiration can be nurtured. Pasquali creates large-scale sculptures and installations so it was imperative for the architects to design a spacious, bright and well ventilated area where the artist can work in. To accommodate this brief, all the amenities and auxiliary spaces have been relegated to the ground floor allowing while a new floor has been erected above to house a large working studio. Allowing abundant daylight in through skylights and two large windows, the artist's studio is a tall, ergonomic space rendered in a neutral, black and white palette: white for the walls and pitched ceiling, which increases the light diffusion, and black for the floor as well as the workbenches, shelving storage units, window frames and stairs. The only colourful items in the studio are the artist’s materials while the only reminder of the building’s previous use is the timber roof trusses. The two wide windows, strategically located on the shorter sides thus allowing the floor-to-ceiling storage facilities to run along the entire length of the space, frame generous views of the landscape, indelibly linking the space with its natural surroundings. The ground floor accommodates two rooms, a laboratory and a study, which are divided by a filter zone housing the kitchen and bathroom. Featuring weathered brick walls, exposed concrete columns added for structural stability, and black metal accents, it has a grittier aesthetic than the larger space above yet it also has a symmetrical layout. In fact, the entire building has been symmetrically designed along its longitudinal axis, which, in the middle of the Italian countryside where the studio stands, is a masterful gesture of both architectural sense and artistic sensibility.
