In a fortnight marked by intense media focus on sexual assault and harassment in the workplace, another news item – also bearing deep-seated gender implications – has moved far more discretely through the Canadian public circuit. Bill C-36, the federal government’s proposed new law to govern sex work, passed through Senate last week, and is now set to receive royal assent.

Penile Code Avenger: The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same: Let's Talk About Domestic Violence | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

For today, we don't even have the right to enjoy our homes, our private spaces, without fearing violence, rape, or worse. And when we dare to point that out, we are not merely dismissed, we are punished.

So many of us are still having to say, "That's life."

House Republicans Continue to Silence Women: Female Reps Prevented from Offering Amendment to Medical Malpractice Bill

House Republicans Continue to Silence Women: Female Reps Prevented from Offering Amendment to Medical Malpractice Bill | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

by MARA GANDAL-POWERS, National Women's Law Center via RH Reality Check

The House of Representatives is currently considering a bill, H.R. 5, which would reform medical malpractice laws. Several Congresswomen drafted an amendment to this bill which would have limited the bill’s malpractice protections if the malpractice claim is based on a violation of the health care reform law related to the women’s preventive health services. The Congresswomen went through the usual steps that an amendment must go through before it can be proposed.... And then the Rules Committee attempted to silence these women, just as Rep. Issa tried to silence Sandra Fluke.

The kits can quickly link rapists to their crimes, but at $1,200 per test, many cities choose to leave them untested. For the victims, they live in constant fear their attackers are still on the streets.

Senate women lead fight to expand domestic violence law

by ROB HOTAKAINEN AND SEAN COCKERHAM, Anchorage Daily News

After winning a fight just last week to preserve contraceptive health insurance coverage for women, Senate Democrats on Thursday battled conservative Republicans who say they don't want to expand an 18-year-old federal law that created a national strategy to prevent domestic violence against women.

While Democrats say they're shocked at any opposition to renewing the Violence Against Women Act, which passed in 1994 with bipartisan support, opponents are trying to block the legislation because, they say, they fear it would broaden American Indian tribal rights and has too many protections for gay and illegal immigrant victims of violence.

A bill to renew the law, introduced by Vermont Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy and co-sponsored by Idaho Republican Sen. Mike Crapo, passed the Senate Judiciary Committee last month on a 10-8 vote, without a single Republican voting in favor.
