The Horrifying Women's Rights Injustice That Modern Feminism Forgot

The Horrifying Women's Rights Injustice That Modern Feminism Forgot | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

The Horrifying Women's Rights Injustice That Modern Feminism Forgot Mic Such an infuriating issue should attract the ire of the feminist community, but so far there are mostly crickets.

Recent legislation regarding the forced sterilizations performed on incarcerated women in California prisons evokes a muted time in U.S. history when sexist, racist, classist and ableist eugenics policies were orchestrated by the state.

In Alabama, Access to Abortion Through the Entire South Is on Trial | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it
Abortion is on trial this week in Alabama. Technically speaking, the witnesses are appearing before federal District Judge Myron Thompson to discuss a new state law that requires doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at local hospitals. Women are thoughtful and smart enough to make their own decisions about their bodies—that's why I hope you stand with the Women's Health Protection Act. We need a federal law to challenge state restrictions and keep politicians out of a woman's personal decision-making, and so I hope you sign onto this powerful bill.

BREAKING: NC GOP Turns Motorcycle Safety Bill Into Abortion Bill With No Public Notice

BREAKING: NC GOP Turns Motorcycle Safety Bill Into Abortion Bill With No Public Notice | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

WASHINGTON -- North Carolina House Republicans are pushing legislation that would restrict abortion access, attaching the measure to an unrelated motorcycle safety bill on Wednesday and giving neither the public nor Democratic legislators any advance notice.

On Wednesday morning, state Rep. Joe Sam Queen (D) wrote on Twitter, "New abortion bill being heard in the committee I am on. The public didn't know. I didn't even know."

"I wish I had more time to look at this new bill before I had to ask questions about it or debate it," he added.

The bill then passed the state House Judiciary Committee in a 10-5 party-line vote.

The stealth maneuver came after North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) threatened to veto a similar Senate bill on Wednesday morning. The Senate legislation would require abortion providers to meet strict licensing standards and would mandate that a doctor is present for the entire procedure.

Penile Code Avenger: The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same: Let's Talk About Domestic Violence | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

For today, we don't even have the right to enjoy our homes, our private spaces, without fearing violence, rape, or worse. And when we dare to point that out, we are not merely dismissed, we are punished.

So many of us are still having to say, "That's life."

Confronting Abortion Stigma

Confronting Abortion Stigma | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Late last month, a New Mexico state representative introduced a bill that would further punish women who are raped, as if sexual violence isn’t enough of a violation. The original bill was based on the notion that having an abortion following a rape equated “tampering with evidence” and would have made abortion in case of rape a felony offense. The absurdity of the bill eventually led to it being withdrawn, but that the idea of forcing raped women into pregnancy and motherhood was proposed at all—and in a state where one in four women reports having been raped—is odious to say the least.

While this bill was particularly offensive, every day of every week several state legislatures are hard at work creating more and more restrictions to punish both women in need of abortion and the medical professionals providing safe abortion care.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Someone you know has been or is going to be stigmatized like this until we change the status quo.

Rep. Gwen Moore Recounts Own Rape and Sexual Assault

Rep. Gwen Moore Recounts Own Rape and Sexual Assault | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

by JOHN PARKINSON,

ABC News Blogs

Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wisc., who joined Pelosi in introducing the [Violence Against Women] legislation, said, “Violence against women is as American as apple pie.”

“Domestic violence has been a thread throughout my personal life — up to and including being a child repeatedly sexually assaulted, up to and including being an adult who’s been raped.”

“This law has helped ensure that more victims report domestic violence to the police, that the rate of non-fatal intimate partner violence against women has been decreased by 53 percent, in that period of time,” she said. “Rape crisis centers have been able to keep their doors open [and] law enforcement and victims’ services providers are working together to better meet the needs of victims.”

“Unfortunately violence is not limited to just Democrats or just Republicans or just blacks or just whites,” Moore, the Democratic Co-Chair of the Congressional Women’s Caucus, said. “It’s not limited to heterosexual relationships, but there are relationships of all kinds that are exposed to domestic violence.”

A Trend Toward Anti-Immigrant, Anti-Choice Laws

A Trend Toward Anti-Immigrant, Anti-Choice Laws | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

by ELENA SHORE, New America Media

2011 saw a record number of laws restricting abortion in U.S. states. It also saw a record number of state anti-immigrant laws. Coincidence?

Maybe not.

In 2011, U.S. states enacted 135 new reproductive health provisions, 92 of them seeking to restrict abortion.

In 2000, 13 states were considered “hostile” to reproductive rights; by 2011, that number had doubled to 26 states, according to the Guttmacher Institute. Last year, more than half of women of reproductive age (15-44) were living in states that were hostile to abortion, up from less than one-third in 2000.

But 2011 was also a record year for anti-immigrant legislation. Five states (Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina, and Utah) passed anti-immigrant bills modeled after Arizona’s 2010 law, SB 1070. An analysis by Mother Jones found that 164 anti-immigration laws were passed by state legislatures in 2010 and 2011.

Here’s a look at five states where anti-immigrant and anti-choice efforts converge: [MORE]

NARAL Pro-Choice America Marks Two-Year Anniversary of Law Representing Biggest Advances for Women’s Health in a Generation

NARAL Pro-Choice America Marks Two-Year Anniversary of Law Representing Biggest Advances for Women’s Health in a Generation | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

NARAL Pro Choice America

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, called the two-year anniversary of President Obama signing the historic Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act into law an opportunity to remind Americans what women would lose if efforts to overturn the law succeed.

On March 26, the Supreme Court will begin to hear arguments from opponents who want to overturn the law. NARAL Pro-Choice America will mobilize its supporters on Tuesday, March 27, the day on which health-care advocates will focus on how the law helps women get affordable care.

Keenan adds, “Since these anti-choice politicians have decided to take their War on Women to the Supreme Court, we’ll meet them at the steps.”

House Republicans Continue to Silence Women: Female Reps Prevented from Offering Amendment to Medical Malpractice Bill

House Republicans Continue to Silence Women: Female Reps Prevented from Offering Amendment to Medical Malpractice Bill | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

by MARA GANDAL-POWERS, National Women's Law Center via RH Reality Check

The House of Representatives is currently considering a bill, H.R. 5, which would reform medical malpractice laws. Several Congresswomen drafted an amendment to this bill which would have limited the bill’s malpractice protections if the malpractice claim is based on a violation of the health care reform law related to the women’s preventive health services. The Congresswomen went through the usual steps that an amendment must go through before it can be proposed.... And then the Rules Committee attempted to silence these women, just as Rep. Issa tried to silence Sandra Fluke.
