The Gay Men Who Hate Women

Ever had a gay man criticize your appearance, or had your ass slapped in a gay club 'as a joke'? Gay male sexism is alive and well.

I like how it says that it becomes epidemic of children being without their dad. But also, it is really upsetting that there are no real man in their community. Also, there are no work and nothing to do. Because of that women have to do everything. This is another example of gender differences and where women have to do everything in order to survive.

Marching Mothers - Battered Mothers Custody Conference, Mothers Day 2014 | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it
Mother’s Day is traditionally filled with flowers, cards, and sometimes breakfast in bed. Most fathers are honored to honor the mother of their mutual children by helping pick the daffodils and burn the toast, carefully covering the black part with a thick layer of marmalade. But mothers are also included in a stark statistic: one…

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Another way gender inequality plays in the horror. As @Claudine Dombrowski wrote, "Men who thought they owned women and children began using their superior economic power to hire attorneys and go to family (divorce) courts to get custody. The mothers, having no money for attorneys, were unable to compete on an uneven playing field.  Huge amounts of money began to change hands as a cottage industry of unregulated court-appointed professionals sprang up to provide opinions. Usually the opinions leaned toward the parent with the money."

These days, before we talk about misogyny, women are increasingly being asked to modify our language so we don’t hurt men’s feelings. | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Don’t say, “Men oppress women” – that’s sexism, as bad as any sexism women ever have to handle, possibly worse. Instead, say, “Some men oppress women.” Whatever you do, don’t generalise. That’s something men do. Not all men – just some men.

This type of semantic squabbling is a very effective way of getting women to shut up. After all, most of us grew up learning that being a good girl was all about putting other people’s feelings ahead of our own. We aren’t supposed to say what we think if there’s a chance it might upset somebody else or, worse, make them angry. So we stifle our speech with apologies, caveats and soothing sounds.

-- Of course all men don’t hate women. But all men must know they benefit from sexism (via albinwonderland)

Feminist Porn Depicts Sexuality's Unruly Side Too

Feminist Porn Depicts Sexuality's Unruly Side Too | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

As this type of porn gains visibility, it reflects a greater demand for explicit sexual representations among women, where sex isn't always a "ribbon-tied box of happiness and joy," say editors in this excerpt from "The Feminist Porn Book."

...With the emergence of new technologies that allow more people than ever to both create and consume pornography, the moral panic-driven fears of porn are ratcheted up once again. Society's dread of women who own their desire, and use it in ways that confound expectations of proper female sexuality, persists. As Gayle Rubin shows, "Modern Western societies appraise sex acts according to a hierarchical system of sexual value." Rubin maps this system as one where "the charmed circle" is perpetually threatened by the "outer limits," or those who fall out of the bounds of the acceptable.

On the bottom of this hierarchy are sexual acts and identities outside heterosexuality, marriage, monogamy and reproduction. She argues that this hierarchy exists so as to justify the privileging of normative and constricted sexualities and the denigration and punishment of the "sexual rabble."

Photographer Attacked for Her Photographs of Domestic Violence | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

[Trigger Warning: This post contains a description and photos of physical assault that may potentially be triggering for survivors of such abuse.]

...Since it was published, Lewkowicz’s project has received negative attention because many commenters feel that Lewkowicz should have tried to stop the abuse rather than standing by and documenting the incident on her camera.  Lewkowicz actually did call 911 (and includes images of their response in her photo essay as well), but for many this was not enough.  Even Maggie was attacked by commenters for allowing the abuse to happen, for staying with Shane, and for not fighting back.  As one commenter states, “She is not a victim.  She is the perpetrator.”  But as Jina Moore notes in her article on Salon.com, the only person who isn’t blamed in these comments is the man committing the violence.
