More Men Are Raped in US Than Women? Not. | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

You may have come across that assertion before if you have the habit of visiting MRA sites on the net.  I've seen it, but never found any sources for it, except for fuzzy hints that it's because of prison rape of men is not included in the general rape statistics.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

The men's rights movement would like to distract from the matter at hand. While men are raped (& abused) looking at the minority of problems does not address the main problem of violence against women. Also, solving the problem of violence against women & rape culture would go a long way in addressing such violence across all genders.

'Victim' vs 'Survivor': Feminism and language | openDemocracy | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Rahila Gupta argues that the term ‘victim’ needs to be reclaimed by feminist politics; whilst 'survivor' is important because it recognises the agency of women, it focuses on individual capacity, but the notion of 'victim' reminds us of the stranglehold of the system.

When Words Become Bullets: Elliot Rodger and the Patriarchal Id | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it
Rodger’s actions have a chilling rationality to them in the terms of our gendered society, which makes objects and possessions of women, and rapacious, status-conscious animals of men. Whatever else Rodger’s crimes are, they are not unintelligible; they merely wrote in blood what too many of us hear, see, and say every day.

But what's Sexual assault in the first place?

Sexual assault can be verbal, visual, or anything that forces a person to join in unwanted sexual contact or attention. Examples of this are voyeurism (when someone watches private sexual acts), exhibitionism (when someone exposes him/herself in public), incest (sexual contact between family members), and sexual harassment. It can happen in different situations:  in the home by someone you know, on a date, or by a stranger in an isolated place.

UN Expresses Concern on International Day to End Violence Against Women

UN Expresses Concern on International Day to End Violence Against Women | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Monday, November 25, is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

...The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS – UNAIDS – says every hour 50 young women become newly infected with HIV. Many of those infections are related to violence.

“Lots of the gender-based violence [is] sexually related. There is a lot of data right now showing that most of the violence against women happens in the context of intimate partner violence – domestic violence. And many times it takes the face of non-consensual sex, which is a polite way to say rape,” said Dr. Mariangela Simao is UNAIDS Director of Rights, Gender, Prevention and Mobilization.

Simao said gender-based violence is strongly linked to HIV/AIDS.

Ageing men are changing men? The debate on men and crime

Ageing men are changing men? The debate on men and crime | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Especially important to me is the possibility of change for older men. I have been involved in an ‘Ageing Men’s Group’ since the 1990s. Our project is precisely to explore how ‘ageing men are changing men’. One conclusion is that retirement or semi-retirement from waged work– has allowed us to redefine relationships with partners in ways that are more equal and also enabled more caring relationships with children, grandchildren, male friends and others. We have also learned that it is possible to redefine relationships between men, in less competitive and anxious ways. Influenced again by feminist ideas and practices, we have constructed a small male public in which it is possible to be less secretive about life’s problems and more accepting about our differences. Around the group there is also a network of friendships, sustained by meetings, phone calls or the Internet. I have learned, perhaps for the first time to trust other men, even in a collective context.
