Apple's "Vagina" Ban is a Bigger Deal Than You Think

Apple's "Vagina" Ban is a Bigger Deal Than You Think | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it
When engraving her new iPad, Justyn Hintze noticed that clit and vagina are considered inappropriate words while penis and dick are not. This may not seem like a big deal, but it represents one of feminism's more important fights.

Bros, This Is How Your Slut-Shaming Is Backfiring. A Sex Researcher Explains | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

When a Duke frat boy recognized a classmate in the porn clip he was watching, the gossip was just too good. He spread the news among some other bros on campus, and the rumor soon traveled from Duke's campus to the blogosphere (including Playboy SFW).

Not All Lefty Man-Hating Feminists Enjoy Porn; Minds Of Conservatives Blown | Sex~Kitten.net | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

I really wish the conservatives out there, especially those who are anti-feminist, would get their facts straight; to-whit, feminists are not celebrating “infamous college campus hook-up culture” ~ and especially not at the price of bad or even mediocre sex. Most feminists are, however, sex positive.

Activist Spotlight: Deon Haywood on Justice and the Movement in New Orleans

Activist Spotlight: Deon Haywood on Justice and the Movement in New Orleans | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

In May of this year, I talked to Deon Haywood, Executive Director of Women With A Vision in New Orleans about her approach to organizing. WWAV scored a significant grassroots legal and political victory in the last year with the NO Justice campaign, which removed hundreds of cis and trans women from Louisiana’s registered felony sexual offender rolls. Deon is a longtime activist in the city of New Orleans, with a history of organizing low-income women of color around reproductive justice, harm reduction, and human rights.

...We are not all in the same boat. And if we keep playing like we are, we’re not really going to make the kind of change we’d like to see. Because the women I work with are never going to be able to jump into the sex workers’ rights movement. They don’t feel like that movement is for them.

We’ve been taught a woman’s body will cause men to sin. | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

We’re told that if a woman shows too much of her body men will do stupid things. Let’s be clear: A woman’s body is not dangerous to you. Her body will not cause you harm. It will not make you do stupid things. If you do stupid things, it is because you chose to do stupid things.

Sex-Ed For Graybeards

Sex-Ed For Graybeards | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it
The truth is slowly dawning on American women that those dear men, perhaps husbands, fathers, or grandfathers, are demonstrating a lack in their education, specifically in their sex-ed, whether it was taught to them by their own fathers, older brothers, or the big boys who stood out on the street corners of their home towns. The poor fellows simply don't know any better! However, they are more than happy to display their ignorance at every opportunity. All one has to do is to stick a microphone in their faces and start asking them questions about some of the foremost debates of the day.

Thus, this old lady, being immune to the fear of death and too jaded to worry about any retaliation, will undertake the task of informing them of those lessons they missed. First, they are not to blame. Traditionally, the sex education of boys has fallen to either fathers or gym coaches -- most of whom suffered from the same ignorance of the subject or were too embarrassed to discuss the topic with the wide-open and expectant faces of the pubescent boys who were so eager to learn. I'm not talking about the "how-to" of the subect. That comes naturally and few boys require any assistance in mastering it.

Romance and pornography : Popular Romance Project

Romance and pornography : Popular Romance Project | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

I teach an undergraduate seminar on “Gender, Sexuality, and Popular Culture” with a unit on the romance genre. This year, for the first time ever, the class consists entirely of women. Also new this year is an exercise we invented of an online, collaborative romance narrative. One question that came up in our writing experiment was how, when, and why to include sex scenes. We talked a lot about depictions of sexuality in romance fiction, as well as in the sex-saturated corridors of popular culture. How are the love scenes in romance different from those in pornography or erotica?

...I’m interested in the notion that a feminist is a woman who writes—a woman who dares explore ideas and fantasies that run contrary to patriarchal scripts for feminine docility, submissiveness, and sexual passivity. These scripts are still alive in the impossible contradictions and double standards my students report: be sexy but also pure, demands the culture. If guys sleep around it’s a sign of mastery and control, but if you do it you’re a slut.

New name for Women’s Studies to become Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, reflect changing field

New name for Women’s Studies to become Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, reflect changing field | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

The Women’s Studies Program will change its name to Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies starting next fall, a move meant to better represent the department, Women’s Studies Interim Program Director Sonia Hofkosh announced at the LGBT Center’s 20th anniversary celebration on Saturday.

...

“From my very first classes, I realized that there’s way more to women’s studies than just feminist history,” Griffiths, a junior, said. “Gender studies [and] queer studies are ... really important intersectional aspects of a lot of the stuff we do in women’s studies, but [currently] there’s no home for it in Tufts.”

1. The teen birth rate is down.
2. The abortion rate is down
3. Access to family planning improves maternal and child health.
4. Sex education increases knowledge and decreases risks.
5. Condoms work.
6. Contraception works.
7. Emergency Contraception (Plan B- One Step ™) works by preventing pregnancy. It does not cause an abortion.
8. Access to a full range of contraceptives decreases the risks of sexual behaviors without increasing risky sexual behavior.
9. Abstinence works while people remain abstinent. When they’re not, it doesn’t.
10. Family planning clinics are not in business because of the high profit margin.

STOKING FIRE: Extremist Anti-Choice Groups Plan Five-State Assault | RH Reality Check

The fanatical fundamentalists are at it again. Not to be outdone by Catholic bishops clamoring for ever-increasing fetal protections, Flip Benham’s Operation Save America has teamed up with Go Stand Speak, LifeLink, Jeremiah Cry Ministries, Personhood USA, and Repent America to make five states—Arkansas, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming—abortion “refuges.”

\The five were chosen because each has just one reproductive health clinic. What’s more, the campaign to make these states abortion-free will link grassroots activism—raucous picketing, complete with billboard-sized pictures of bloody body parts--with a media crusade geared to maligning those who support freedom of choice.
