One by one, they came forward, finding safety in their staggering number and a world that was finally ready to believe them.
Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

What's so amazing is that it took a man's voice, a comedian's, to raise the issue and expose it. While you may be overwhelmed and even bored by this news story, it is important. Many excellent insights and quotes.

More Men Are Raped in US Than Women? Not.

More Men Are Raped in US Than Women? Not. | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

You may have come across that assertion before if you have the habit of visiting MRA sites on the net.  I've seen it, but never found any sources for it, except for fuzzy hints that it's because of prison rape of men is not included in the general rape statistics.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

The men's rights movement would like to distract from the matter at hand. While men are raped (& abused) looking at the minority of problems does not address the main problem of violence against women. Also, solving the problem of violence against women & rape culture would go a long way in addressing such violence across all genders.

Give Men Same Rape Advice You Give Women, Here's How Absurd It Would Sound

Give Men Same Rape Advice You Give Women, Here's How Absurd It Would Sound | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it
Read closely, fellas.

Women, like men, have the right to move throughout the world without constantly fearing for their safety, yet the burden of prevention continues to fall squarely on women's shoulders. One can't help but wonder, what would it look like if we talked to men about rape prevention in the same way we talk to women?

malek's curator insight, September 3, 2014 9:08 AM

To those who say that anti-rape advice for potential victims is just "common sense", please know that statistically, only 10% of victims were raped by strangers. 90% of sexual assault survivors knew who their attackers were. Avoiding walking in dark streets didn't work for a majority of victims, because they were not raped in an alley, but in their own homes, or the homes of someone they trusted.

The Blame Game: Black Women, Shame, and Victim Blaming

The Blame Game: Black Women, Shame, and Victim Blaming | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

The many stereotypes of black women are used to justify violence and aggression against them.  Because black women are mythologized as gold-digging, angry, physically strong, provocative shrews some black men assume (and this is something that having a mama, a auntie, a grandmother who raised you, or your own damn daughters doesn’t change) that if/when black women are hit, they asked for (or deserved) it.  At the end of the day many men empathize with other men and instead of vilifying any act of violence, physical or otherwise, against anyone, especially a woman, they attempt to justify it.  They put themselves in the shoes of the aggressor, but not the victim, and see themselves as blameless and reactionary, rather than violent and misogynistic.

I Was Sexually Assaulted By Someone I Thought Was A Feminist And An Ally | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Years ago, I was in a serious relationship with someone I thought embodied the epitome of allyship.  He believed in collectivism, prison reform and feminist ideals.  When we first met we spent hours talking about social justice, anti-racism and how patriarchy was disappointingly widespread.  A scholar of African American Studies, I thought he was everything I had been looking for—a radical public intellectual and a partner. Six months into our relationship, we had an argument about his incomparable desire for biological children.  He said he required his female partner carry his children, but I was hesitant. Years of organizing with foster youth...

malek's curator insight, April 30, 2014 9:22 AM

But what's Sexual assault in the first place?

Sexual assault can be verbal, visual, or anything that forces a person to join in unwanted sexual contact or attention. Examples of this are voyeurism (when someone watches private sexual acts), exhibitionism (when someone exposes him/herself in public), incest (sexual contact between family members), and sexual harassment. It can happen in different situations:  in the home by someone you know, on a date, or by a stranger in an isolated place.

Those figures came as a shock to most Germans, who think of their country as a leader in the struggle for women's equality. [...]"
