How to stop Hollywood being so sexist: Geena Davis’ feminist manifesto

How to stop Hollywood being so sexist: Geena Davis’ feminist manifesto | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

"In 1991, Geena Davis starred in Thelma & Louise, a road movie about two women who become fugitives, which led critics to describe it as a “feminist manifesto for the 90s”.

Two decades on and the actress is so disillusioned with the film industry’s attitude to women she has drawn up a feminist manifesto of her own with “two easy steps to make Hollywood less sexist”.

In a column for The Hollywood Reporter’s 'Women in Entertainment Power 100' issue, the Oscar-winner bemoaned the gender imbalance in media and entertainment and called on film makers to introduce more female characters into their movies to provide positive role models for the young."

Porn & Romance: An Odd Couple?

Porn & Romance: An Odd Couple? | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

While romance novels may seem to be harmless entertainment, they have a darker side. One study found that women who buy into romantic fantasies tend to choose occupations with reduced economic rewards that require less education after high school.

Such women also show little interest in high-status occupations. Living too fully in an unreal world of fantasy and romance can undermine your economic prospects in the real world.

Both hypersexuality and the romance genre of books and movies are part of the New Soft War, because both have negative effects on one very important part of a woman’s anatomy according to the American Psychological Association: her brain.

Joss Whedon and The Progressive Nerd Bro Playbook

Joss Whedon and The Progressive Nerd Bro Playbook | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Last week Joss Whedon, nerd icon and purveyor of Strong Female Characters, gave a speech for human rights organisation Equality Now in which he performed the essential public service of demonstrating why he shouldn’t ever be taken seriously on matters of gender justice. Whedon, whose self-congratulatory celebration of sexually appealing female violence has long been a point of frustration for me and many other feminists, seemed to be reading directly from The Progressive Nerd Bro Playbook. I have been unable, thus far, to prove that this book exists, but Whedon’s speech provides essential clues that may enable us to reverse-engineer it under laboratory conditions.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Even if you like Whedon's works, this is worthy of a read.

Clever women remain 'ugly' almost by definition, but this new film should give us hope

Clever women remain 'ugly' almost by definition, but this new film should give us hope | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

The biopic tracks Arendt's experiences reporting on the trial of Nazi SS-Officer Adolf Eichmann, unapologetically centralising her role as a public intellectual. Relationships with friends and her husband, including notable author Mary McCarthy, are also rather sensitively depicted. But they are subplots to the real deal, Arendt's ideas.

Unlike the majority of films or television shows when they deign to give airtime to women, “Hannah Arendt” refuses to replicate the stereotypical territory of acceptable-woman-characters. It is not about Arendt the lover (see: almost all women in films), Arendt as a writerly version of the oh-so-“normal” woman hung up on weight and boyfriends (see: Bridget Jones), or Arendt the supposed high-flyer beseiged by mental health issues (see: Scandinavian drama).

“Hannah Arendt” is, instead, about Hannah Arendt the thinker. It rightly credits Professor Arendt, responsible for some of the most publicly enduring theories in 20th century philosophy, with an intellectual interiority mostly reserved – at least in the public eye – for white men.

Climate Change-Driven Prostitution Claim In House Resolution Makes For Misleading Headlines

Climate Change-Driven Prostitution Claim In House Resolution Makes For Misleading Headlines | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Lee and her 11 Democratic cosponsors are asking Congress to acknowledge that climate change affects women, especially poor women, more than it affects men, and to develop "gender-sensitive frameworks" as they work to address it.

"It's unfortunate that this resolution has been misrepresented as to its goals," Lee wrote in a statement. "Tragically, as women across the world are pushed to the margins, they become more vulnerable. And we've seen time after time, that women on the edge are forced to make heartbreaking choices, this among them."

I don’t mean to sound sexist, but... | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

I don't mean to sound sexist, but as far as women have come over the last 40 years, you don’t really see a lot of women hunters. They’re still in the minority in the military, and there’s not a lot of female construction workers. I hope that’s not taken the wrong way. I think women are as smart, resourceful, and capable in most things as any man could be … but they are generally physically weaker. That’s science.

“—

Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead comic series, in response to the question “Why are all the strong female characters either crazy or dead”

And now that you have this information, carry on however you wish to.

sexism often goes unnoticed by the ones who have never been touched by it

(via elvira)

Fucking moron. My cousin weighs 100 pounds & she’s a bad ass super strong construction worker. And if your argument is that in reality women are physically weaker, maybe in your horror fantasy world you can overcome that belief because something else that doesn’t exist in reality are FUCKING ZOMBIES. God! IDIOT!
