How sexism in schools is 'exhausting' young women

How sexism in schools is 'exhausting' young women | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

I'm fifteen years old, currently studying for my GCSEs and I feel that sexism in schools is a massive issue. The last thing I want to hear when walking into school on a Monday morning are rape 'jokes' and go-back-to-the-kitchen 'jokes'. Many girls who openly support feminism are automatically...

@Laura Brown I can't agree with you. Wearing shirts about guns & violent threats isn't the answer to rape culture. In fact, this stinks more of rape culture than anything. It's about a man's property; not respect or a woman's value.
Laura Brown's comment, January 21, 2015 6:23 PM
I'm reading it as more bluster or humour based. But the tone of protecting daughters is still important. People don't protect something or someone they don't value.
Laura Brown's comment, January 21, 2015 6:25 PM
Maybe it's a Canada/ US difference too. Not many people here actually have a gun to wave around. So here a shirt like that would not be seen as serious versus humour or propaganda.

Do All-Girls Schools Breed Feminists or Mean Girls? | TIME.com

Do All-Girls Schools Breed Feminists or Mean Girls? | TIME.com | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

What happens when girls aren't under the scrutiny of boys? Do they get more girly or less so?

A new study has found that girls at same-sex schoolsfeel greater pressure to adhere to gender norms — and were bullied if they didn’t — than those at mixed-gender schools. Perhaps even more surprising, the same researchers say that girls at same-sex schools evaluated their self-worth based more on social confidence than cognitive confidence — while girls at mixed-gender schools weighed academics more heavily than social prowess.

...

“I was quite surprised by the results,” he says. “But do I think that these result would generalize to schools in North America? I do.”

Other experts disagree.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Fascinating -- and not just because I went to a women only college (esp as college is different than middle school).

Porn & Romance: An Odd Couple?

Porn & Romance: An Odd Couple? | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

While romance novels may seem to be harmless entertainment, they have a darker side. One study found that women who buy into romantic fantasies tend to choose occupations with reduced economic rewards that require less education after high school.

Such women also show little interest in high-status occupations. Living too fully in an unreal world of fantasy and romance can undermine your economic prospects in the real world.

Both hypersexuality and the romance genre of books and movies are part of the New Soft War, because both have negative effects on one very important part of a woman’s anatomy according to the American Psychological Association: her brain.

The girls are the ones showing up with most of their skin exposed. Other than showing their boxers, the boys have far less exposure. I'm glad if schools are enforcing dress codes. I get annoyed seeing young women with their ass, boobs and belly exposed. They look like they should be acting on some TV show like Dukes of Hazard, or some other show geared for men who want to see soft porn on TV.

What happened when I started a feminist society at school

What happened when I started a feminist society at school | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

After returning from this school trip I started to notice how much the girls at my school suffer because of the pressures associated with our gender. Many of the girls have eating disorders, some have had peers heavily pressure them into sexual acts, others suffer in emotionally abusive relationships where they are constantly told they are worthless.

I decided to set up a feminist society at my school, which has previously been named one of "the best schools in the country", to try to tackle these issues. However, this was more difficult than I imagined as my all-girls school was hesitant to allow the society. After a year-long struggle, the feminist society was finally ratified.

What I hadn't anticipated on setting up the feminist society was a massive backlash from the boys in my wider peer circle. They took to Twitter and started a campaign of abuse against me. I was called a "feminist bitch", accused of "feeding [girls] bullshit", and in a particularly racist comment was told "all this feminism bull won't stop uncle Sanjit from marrying you when you leave school".

Girl Scouts Chapter Introduces Game Design Merit Badge | Mashable

Girl Scouts Chapter Introduces Game Design Merit Badge | Mashable | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

By Chelsea Stark

"The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles have introduced a Game Design merit badge to help encourage its members to get interested in a variety of science and technology fields.

"The L.A. Girl Scouts chapter partnered with the Women in Games International organization to create a curriculum for the patch. Girls will be required to program their games as well as design them, using software called Gamestar Mechanic.

"The Boy Scouts of America introduced a Game Design merit badge last month, but it does not include the programming requirement.

"The Girl Scouts' version hasn't been approved by the national organization yet, thus it is only available to Girl Scouts in the Los Angeles chapter. According to NBC News, it's designed for girls in 4th to 6th grade."

"but when you write that “’misandry’ has become a cute term to express one’s disgust for the patriarchy” and that “it wouldn’t be shocking to see a 16-year-old white girl’s Tumblr with a picture of her holding a heart-shaped card emblazoned with “I Love Misandry” and surrounded by sparkles” because the whole concept is “cute, and it’s harmless,” you effectively trivialize teenage girls as a category (who get shit on enough, and no, adding ‘white’ to your description doesn’t make it better) as well as the particular and collective experiences of women who have suffered material, physical, emotional, and psychic harm from patriarchy as a structural oppression and men as both individuals and as a category, who utilize individual and collective hatred of men as a means of daily coping, of friendship and bonding, and of resistance.  blindness to intersectionality isn’t the fault of “misandry”; it’s the fault of shitty feminists, period."
