Mark Cole's legislative aide said he is not planning on introducing the ERA legislation to be heard in the House committee effectively stopping progress on the ERA bill for Virginians and for our nation. Actress and longtime supporter of women's rights Susan Sarandon denounced the word feminist in a recent interview with The Guardian:
"I think of myself as a humanist because I think it’s less alienating to people who think of feminism as being a load of strident bitches and because you want everyone to have equal pay, equal rights, education and healthcare.
It’s a bit of an old-fashioned word. It’s used more in a way to minimize you. My daughter [Eva Amurri] who is 28, doesn’t even relate to the word “feminist” and she is definitely in control of her decisions and her body."
It’s frustrating to see successful women such as Sarandon, Katy Perry, and even Yahoo’s CEO Marissa Mayer dismiss feminism when their successes would have been virtually impossible without it. It’s especially frustrating to hear support for the historic goals of feminism — equality, education, healthcare — in one sentence and then the term’s denouncement in the next.
On the other hand, use of the word "humanist" is also more inclusive, making equality for women part of a larger battle including race, age, sexual orientation, on & on & on...

Abortion and access to contraception often get lumped with marriage equality as “social issues,” but there are reasons why they’ve played out differently. Take Portman’s own reasoning in his Op-Ed this morning: “We conservatives believe in personal liberty and minimal government interference in people’s lives. We also consider the family unit to be the fundamental building block of society. We should encourage people to make long-term commitments to each other and build families, so as to foster strong, stable communities and promote personal responsibility.” In other words, gay and lesbian people are joining what Portman considers to be, and has historically been, a conservative institution — much like the military, where they’d already been serving in secret.
Although family planning used to be considered a conservative issue, there is still something more radical and terrifying about a woman not wanting to be a mother, or wanting to be a mother on her own terms. There will always be people who consider it the same as murder of a fully developed person in the world. There is still far more empathy for an embryo or fetus than for the living woman.
It's that last line of what I've quoted from the article which has upset me so deeply for what's now become my entire life.

Lynne Osterman who was elected as a Republican to the Minnesota legislature says regrets casting a "political expedient" vote for Minnesota's "Defense of Marriage" law that outlawed same-sex marriage. She tears up when talking about it and urges Minnesota lawmakers to legalize same-sex marriage.
It's so sad that being decent has to be such rare & brave thing.

I always knew this was the longest revolution, one that would take a century or more to unfold. It's upended most of our lives, and significantly improved so many of them. Nothing will ever be the same. Yet there's still such a long way to go. I doubt I'll see full gender equality in my lifetime.
