Reflections on the Fifth Anniversary of the Assassination of Dr. George Tiller | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it
The road ahead for abortion providers and their allies to not only preserve George Tiller’s specialized service, but simply to stay open, is hardly an easy one. But many of those who knew Dr. Tiller as a colleague and friend are no doubt fortified by remembering one of his favorite sayings: “Attitude is everything.”

Culture change is distinct from policy change and health-care access, but it’s just as important. It’s difficult to imagine long-term policy gains without doing the hard work to change norms, beliefs, and behavior.

Texas Congressman: Masturbating Fetuses Prove Need for Abortion Ban

Texas Congressman: Masturbating Fetuses Prove Need for Abortion Ban | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

“Watch a sonogram of a 15-week baby, and they have movements that are purposeful,” said Burgess, a former OB/GYN. “They stroke their face. If they’re a male baby, they may have their hand between their legs. If they feel pleasure, why is it so hard to believe that they could feel pain?”

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Remember, it's only important if a male fetus pleasures himself.

Abortion and Magical Thinking | The Nation

Abortion and Magical Thinking | The Nation | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

Anti-choicers think what they believe determines how abortion restrictions are enforced. They're dangerously wrong.

It takes a special kind of willful ignorance to oppose legal abortion these days. In fact, being disconnected from reality has become the most definitive characteristic of the anti-choice movement. Pregnancy from rape? The body can “shut that whole thing down.” Birth control? Just another kind of abortifacient. Then there are the made-up “post-abortion syndromes” and unsubstantiated links between abortion and breast cancer. But no kind of anti-choice rhetoric is more dangerous than the fantasy that making abortion illegal will not hurt women.

47,000 Women Die Each Year From Unsafe Abortions

47,000 Women Die Each Year From Unsafe Abortions | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it

by TARA CULP-RESSLER, ThinkProgress

According to the Guttmacher Institute, complications from unsafe abortions in the developing world contribute to 47,000 preventable deaths each year.

In all parts of the world, women have abortions for similar reasons, often for the very same reasons that woman who have access to modern contraception choose to use birth control. Women want to be able to delay having children if they are financially unable to care for a child or additional children, if they are not in a stable relationship with a partner who can help them care for a child, or if they still need to finish their education. But contraception isn’t readily available in many of the countries where women are dying from botched abortion procedures. Guttmacher estimates that about 222 million women in the developing world are trying to avoid pregnancy, but aren’t using a modern form of contraception, putting themselves at risk for an unintended pregnancy and an unsafe abortion.

The only good abortion is my abortion

The only good abortion is my abortion | Dare To Be A Feminist | Scoop.it
As I write this, it is 1:17 am on Wednesday, June 20th, 2012. I am lying awake in bed, trying to decide whether or not to have an abortion. Of course, we don’t call it an abortion. We call it “a procedure” or a D&C.
