Chandrayaan-2: Vikram's orbit reduced, gets closer to landing

Chandrayaan-2: Vikram's orbit reduced, gets closer to landing | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Operating independently for the first time since Chandrayaan-2was launched on July 22, Vikram, the lander, underwent its first manoeuvre around Moon.
Isro successfully completed the first de-orbiting manoeuvre at 8.50 am Tuesday, using for the first time, the propulsion systems on Vikram. All these days all operations were carried out by systems on the orbiter, from which Vikram, carrying Pragyan (rover) inside it, separated from on Monday.
"The duration of the maneuver was 4 seconds. The orbit of Vikram is 104kmX128 km, the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter continues to orbit Moon in the existing orbit and both the orbiter and lander are healthy," Isro said.

The next de-orbiting maneuver is scheduled on September 04 between 3.30 am and 4.30 am.
As reported by TOI, the landing module (Vikram and Pragyan) successfully separated from the orbiter at 1.15 pm Monday (September 2), pushing India's Chandrayaan-2 mission into the last and most crucial leg: Moon landing.
"The operation was great in the sense that we were able to separate the lander and rover from the orbiter—It is the first time in the history of Isro that we've separated two modules in space. This was very critical and we did it very meticulously," Isro chairman K Sivan told TOI soon after the separation.

The Man Behind The Mac OS Is Working On A Mystery Startup With Other Ex-Apple Employees

The Man Behind The Mac OS Is Working On A Mystery Startup With Other Ex-Apple Employees | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

Bertrand Serlet is widely considered to be the brains behind Apple's Mac operating system. He was even mentioned as a possible successor to Steve Jobs at one point. So it came as a shock to some when Serlet decided to step down in March, 2011 after 22 years with the company.

At the time, Serlet offered a vague explanation for his decision, noting that he wanted to "focus less on products and more on science." He didn't mention any specific plans at the time and has effectively dropped off the radar, until now.

Business Insider has learned that Serlet has spent much of the time since his departure from Apple working with at least two other former Apple employees to launch a cloud computing startup in downtown Palo Alto called Upthere.

The startup is still in stealth mode, so information about it is scarce, but we've uncovered a few details about the company through job postings, trademark requests, domain name registrations and tweets from employees.

T-Mobile's USA HSPA+ 42 smartphone users guzzle 1.3 GB per month - FierceWireless

T-Mobile's USA HSPA+ 42 smartphone users guzzle 1.3 GB per month - FierceWireless | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it
T-Mobile USA subscribers with smartphones capable of accessing the carrier's HSPA+ 42 Mbps network consume an average of 1.3 GB per month. The figure is almost double the 760 MB per month that T-Mobile said its overall smartphone user base consumes, and it highlights the fact that users generally consume more mobile data if they have access to a faster network.

According to Chetan Sharma Consulting, roughly 30 percent of all U.S. smartphone users download more than 1 GB of data per month.

T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray disclosed the carrier's figures during a presentation at the NGMN conference in San Francisco. Ray also said that video accounts for almost 50 percent of T-Mobile's overall HSPA network traffic.

Currently, T-Mobile offers an HSPA+42 network covering 184 million POPs in 185 markets, and its HSPA+21 network covers around 220 million POPs. The carrier advertises the network as "America's largest" that provides "4G" speeds. Indeed, independent tests have shown that T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 network offers download speeds of around 8 Mbps, similar to what Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) provides via its LTE network.

Five unexpected venture capital deal trends

Five unexpected venture capital deal trends | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it
Venture capitalists invested $8.1 billion into 981 U.S.-based companies last quarter, according to PitchBook Data. That’s basically flat from the prior quarter, and suggests that year-end 2013 totals will be a bit lower than the 2012 tally. So that’s the top-line. What lies beneath, however, is much more interesting. Fortune has gotten a sneak peak at PitchBook’s new VC Valuations and Trends Report, which has financing terms on more than 11,000 deals (including 2,900 that have closed since 2012). Here are five notable data points.

In Changing News Landscape, Even Television is Vulnerable

In Changing News Landscape, Even Television is Vulnerable | cross pond high tech | Scoop.it

From PewResearchCenter — Trends in News Consumption: 1991-2012

While traditional news platforms have lost audience, online news consumption has been undergoing major changes as well. Nearly one-in-five Americans (17%) say they got news yesterday on a mobile device yesterday, with the vast majority of these people (78%) getting news on their cell phone. Among smartphone owners, nearly a third (31%) got news yesterday on a mobile device.

The second major trend in online news consumption is the rise of news on social networks. Today, 19% of the public says they saw news or news headlines on social networking sites yesterday, up from 9% two years ago. And the percentage regularly getting news or news headlines on these sites has nearly tripled, from 7% to 20%.
