An 'empathy machine'? How virtual reality could affect storytelling

An 'empathy machine'? How virtual reality could affect storytelling | BI Revolution | Scoop.it
The documentary is being reinvented for virtual reality, but what challenges does this pose to content creators?

Here's a fascinating article about the problems with virtual reality storytelling and empathy.

Virtual Reality (VR) is all the rage and very popular at SXSW. We know storytelling is a powerhouse for building our empathy muscles. But what is the impact of VR on empathy?

Turns out, it's not what you think.

The aim of VR is to encourage a human connection and understanding between those wearing a headset and the characters in the story.

Problems around empathy rise when certain stories simply generate a feeling of helplessness in the participant that leads to greater detachment -- not greater human connection.

I love what one of those interviewed for the article says near the end: "But the empathy idea presents another problem for me – the notion that the world's problems arise from a scarcity of feeling rather than from issues of power, inequality and exploitation of people and planetary resources." Hear hear.

There are more details and insights to read in this long-very-long post, and it will make you go, "huh".

What do you think about VR, empathy, and this storytelling trend?

Web 3.0 Is About PAGES not Websites
This is an interesting new tool. Here is my favorite paragraph::

Once an index is built, users can start mining email addresses, phone number and other keywords straight from search result pages. Minerazzi also allows you to identify sets of keywords with common features such as number of occurrences, byte size, etc.

Topical search isolated and capable of being mined is an example of where web 3.0 is head - to a land of pages instead of sites. We get a result and we convert more than we go some where and we convert.

Content Shock: Why content marketing is not a sustainable strategy - Schaefer

Content Shock: Why content marketing is not a sustainable strategy - Schaefer | BI Revolution | Scoop.it
Is the end of the content marketing era in sight?
Martin (Marty) Smith's insight:

This is an IMPORTANT read and one I keep reading over and over. I agree with the central idea. I disagree with the conclusion. Content marketing is important even if no one reads your stuff.

Crazy?

The content you create says more about you than anything. While the goal of every website must be building community you can't build community if you have no content on your site. Your voice and SELF has to be present and accounted for even if the only purpose it serves is to make people comfortable sharing their content.

More later, in the meantime I'm going to re-read this great post again.

New Experian Deal Seeking Study Says Stop Never Ending Sales - via @ScentTrail | BI Revolution | Scoop.it

Thank You Experian! Experian’s new Deal Seekers Report says what every Internet marketer sensed – refusing to segment customers online is goofystupid. Why would any online retailer treat all customers the same?

2014 will be the year segments and personas are a MUST and that includes shouting DEAL, SALE and 50% Off 50% Off all the time. Experian's new study shows such behavior is beyond stupid since it actively turns off 40% of your website's visitors.

Are deals important? Yes for 18% of your visitors (Deal-Seeking Influentials), so figure out programs to support your "influentials" so they can do the heavy lifting for you and you don't sound like a fool to everyone else (lol).

As Seth Godin so famously said, we content market because it is all that is left. 2013 promises to be the year content marketers begin to tie the top of the conversion funnel where the traffic goes in to the bottom where the money is made.
