Actionable Ways Big Data Analytics Can Improve Innovation

Actionable Ways Big Data Analytics Can Improve Innovation | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

Signals assembled some of the big thinkers in big data. The discussion centered on the challenges faced by innovation teams at leading corporates, the potential (and hurdle) of “big data”, and fresh ideas on how to bridge that gap and tapping big data for innovation work.

Luca Naso's insight:

Here are 4 highlights from the conversation:

1. Product launchers need something to hold onto

2. Connecting the dots for the right context (aka find the right question)

3. Seeing is believing: the power of visualization

4. Caution: more data does not equal smarter data

Size doesn't matter: can SMEs conquer Big Data? | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
Big Data involves collecting a large volume of information. As SMEs don't have access to the same amount of data as larger corporations, does it mean SMEs can't make use of Big Data? Here is a case study with Ovolo Hotels.
Luca Naso's insight:

Data can be useful in a number of different ways. I like to say that Small Data gives you answers, while Big Data gives you questions.

In this article we read the case study of Ovolo Hotels. it's a small company that is leveraging data to improve their business in many ways.

Don't collect data just because Big Data is cool: if you don't use your data efficiently it's all a big waste.

IBM CEO Ginni Rometty believes big data and social will change everything - how about other CEOs? | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

As reported by Forbes, Ginni Rometty, CEO of IBM believes that big data, social, and data analytics are the 3 areas which will give companies a competitive advantage.

Luca Naso's insight:

Social Media, Big Data and Data Analytics, have a great power, that can only be harnessed if CEOs will really embrace them.

Part of the challenge is that executives don’t understand social media’s potential for business impact — primarily because they have not experienced social media themselves:

to get digital you need to be digital!

Apple's iRadio and Big Data

Apple's iRadio and Big Data | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
If all rumors are correct, Apple is about to launch iRadio at the upcoming developers conference. How can Big Data improve that service?
Luca Naso's insight:

10' video on how Apple is planning to use Big Data for their new streaming music service, and how they are already using Big Data for understanding how people use their products.

Big Data's main role is Personalisation, both for suggesting new music, and for doing targeted advertisment.

According to previous history, purchase history, songs in the iTunes library and general feedback, data analytics can suggest the best music for every person.

However, too much personalisation can be bad. It could take away the joy of discovery from the music experience...

Internet of Things Dissected By SmartThings CTO Jeff Hagins

Internet of Things Dissected By SmartThings CTO Jeff Hagins | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

The Internet of Things is the 3rd wave of internet that is transforming the ways in which we live and work. Therefore, it has to involve the physical world.

Luca Naso's insight:

"Automation" is an important part of the equation. Internet of Things is not about moving the switches from the wall into the device (smartphone or tablet), but to remove them all!

We are at a stage where software has a concrete opportunity to reinvent the hardware.

Security is another important part of the equation. And it only happens if you include it in your design. This requires time, people, resource and money.

Even more, security and easy of use are on different part of the balance. There is a trade-off between "plug and play" and security, and it is not yet clear how to achieve the best balance.

Big Data and Bacteria: Mapping the New York Subway’s DNA

Big Data and Bacteria: Mapping the New York Subway’s DNA | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
An 18-month project to map the microbes that populate the New York City subway system—which include the germs that cause food poisoning, meningitis and even bubonic plague—shows how commuters pass on bacteria from the food they eat, the pets or plants they keep, and their shoes, trash, sneezes and unwashed hands.
Luca Naso's insight:

The big data project (the first genetic profile of a metropolitan transit system) is in many ways “a mirror of the people themselves who ride the subway,” said Dr. Mason, a geneticist at the Weill Cornell Medical College.

It is also a revealing glimpse into the future of public health.

By documenting the miniature wildlife, microbiologists hope to discover new ways to track disease outbreaks, detect bioterrorism attacks and combat the growing antibiotic resistance among microbes, which causes about 1.7 million hospital infections every year.

What is Big Data? It’s More Than Just Buzz and Pixie Dust

What is Big Data? It’s More Than Just Buzz and Pixie Dust | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
What is big data? Is it Hadoop? MapReduce? There are plenty of technologies, but businesses are just now learning which questions they can ask of big data.
Luca Naso's insight:

This video is for Big Data beginners, and those business people who hear about it all the time but they don't really understand what it is.

First of all Big Data is big and growing fast. Whenever something happens in the digital world, it gets bigger.

Then, Big Data is actually simple. It is based on just four pillars: (1) data sources, (2) data storage, (3) data access and (4) business intelligence.

Finally it can answer very relevant questions as "who's ready to buy?" and

"does inventory match demand?"

Take a step back, look at the big picture and ask yourself what can Big Data do for you?

How Far are We Going to Take This Personalisation Trend?

How Far are We Going to Take This Personalisation Trend? | Big Data & Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

The personalisation of the web has advantages (more personal) and disadvantages (too narrow), but for marketers where do we draw the line?

Luca Naso's insight:

Many businesses are struggling with the personalisation of the web in terms of their video content: it is not scalable to create a video for each and every person that we want to target.

Here is an interesting example on how to use digital technologies and some analytics to make a successful decision.

The next step is to use the knowledge acquired in this process to study a larger database of data, looking for more and better customer targets (maybe also some you couldn't think of).
