The Trouble With Content Marketing

The Trouble With Content Marketing | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it

Content marketing is everything. It's nothing. It's substantial like rock. It's fleeting like the wind. It's both sides of the brain in perfect harmony. It's the brand story. It's the value proposition shown, not told. In other words, it's a tactic with an identity crisis.

Teeehe Content Marketing Institute itself is proud to stack up no fewer than 21 explanations of this burgeoning field, plus six more definitions on another page on its site. I say this not to ridicule, but to highlight the confusion in the marketplace about content marketing. There's not a broadly agreed-upon definition of the field....

Content marketing has an identity crisis. Here's why (and how to resolve it).

Andrea Rossi's curator insight, March 11, 2016 2:25 AM

Don't you love my great title?

Ok, it's confusing but trust me, this article is not and makes a good job at explaining a simple but often misunderstood truth on content marketing: the intent is important.

Publishing content randomly won't help your brand or company at all. It's publishing content that adds value to your audience and brings it close to your brand or a buying decision.

So not all content is created equal.

Content Marketing & Curation Becoming Important For B2C and B2B Says New Content Marketing Institute Study

Content Marketing & Curation Becoming Important For B2C and B2B Says New Content Marketing Institute Study | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it
MarketingProfs and the Content Marketing Institute (CMI) have followed up their study of B2B content marketing trends with research into the emerging trends in the B2C

Via Martin (Marty) Smith, Deanna Dahlsad
Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

I'm still not convinced that curation is all that new or different than blogging or other online publishing activities. (Blogging is not dead.) Nor am I convinced it is the most important thing you can do in terms of marketing. (And just because "everyone is doing it" doesn't sway me either; like momma always said about if so & so jumped off a bridge...) But I don't think curation can be overlooked much longer. Curation needs to be evaluated for several major factors:

a) can it fit within your scope (Do you have the time & skill set? Can you do this in house or should you hire?)

b) purpose (to maintain existing clients/customers, to reach new ones?)

b) where would it fit? (Not all curation sites are the same; some are more suitable for products, brands, B2B or B2C reach, demographics, etc.)

While B2B marketers are beginning to adopt B2C best practices when it comes to e-commerce, B2B marketers have traditionally invested more of their budgets into content marketing than their B2C counterparts, making it interesting to see how both sides measure up in this rapidly-growing area. There are many more similarities than one might expect.

igital marketing and SEO could be considered to be the same thing; but they are two separate entities.

Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Probably the neatest tool is how it gives links posted at Facebook larger images (which is inclined to get more notice/interaction). However, this is not free; lowest rate is $29 a month.

Laura Brown's comment, September 10, 2013 10:40 PM
Sad, but if it isn't free I just don't want to bother. Not because I'm cheap but because I am SO VERY tired of spending money on something only to be disappointed and annoyed at the time I wasted trying it out instead of sticking with the freeware. I've become hugely reluctant to pay for anything online because none of it offers anything really new, useful or functional.
Deanna Dahlsad's comment, September 10, 2013 10:42 PM
I could be crazy, but it looks like FB has improved the size of images in links posted on Pages... Not all of them, but sometimes they do slow rollouts, so my fingers are crossed ;)

Why We Can't Just Be SEOs Anymore

Why We Can't Just Be SEOs Anymore | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it

Rand Fishkin shares his take on the shift from "SEO" to "inbound marketing" and what the future holds for our industry at large.

Via Antonino Militello
Deanna Dahlsad's insight:

Personally, people who practiced "the old SEO", who didn't think of this "new" stuff, were missing out then too. It's never a really good idea to focus on being a cog to the exclusion of the process and purpose of the whole well-oiled machine.

David Pangione's comment, May 11, 2013 7:14 PM
I have found that there are tons and tons of strategies to SEO. Some beginners that enter are just bewildered by the amount of information they feel is needed to be learned.
Gaurav Pandey's comment, May 11, 2013 7:35 PM
Hi David, I feel it's the same for marketing, if not more overwhelming. However, going forward we will see a lot of overlap between the two roles and it's probably not going to affect those who are really good at SEO, but a lot of people with intermediate-advanced knowledge who call themselves SEO pro's will surely come under the pump as a marketing expert could acquire intermediate SEO skills if he has to.

A decision made by another party, one they had no control over, took a wonderful business and destroyed it.And that’s precisely what you risk every day you make your business completely dependent on another company.  It might be Facebook. Google’s And Bing’s Search Strategies Diverge

Google’s And Bing’s Search Strategies Diverge | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it

"Not too long ago, Google and Bing seemed fully focused on adding as many social features to their search engines as possible.

For Google, that meant adding lots of Google+ features and for Bing it meant making the best out of its exclusive relationship with Facebook. Since then, though, it seems the two search engines’ strategies have changed, with Google slowly deemphasizing social search and Bing going all in by adding more social features than ever".

Content Curation your secret weapon - Drive Traffic & Find New Customers

Content Curation your secret weapon - Drive Traffic & Find New Customers | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it

Brian Yanish posted a great case study on his blog on how to use Content Curation as a secret weapon to market your business. As a consultant helping clients market themselves online, Brian has a lot of experience with various marketing strategies and it's great to see his angle on how content curation can help.

As he summarizes it after having been a Scoop.it user for quite some time (and testing lots of curation services), Content Curation "can drive traffic and help to show the world, yes the world that your business knows your market."

Must-read with very interesting data for business content curators.

Content curation: make it part of your content strategy | Freelance Marketing Blog | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it

If you're not convinced yet, freelance Content Marketer and blogger Mike Farmer has some interesting points for you.

One thing I would add to his post is the importance of creating a Content Curation hub to really capture the benefits of your Content Curation efforts. Sharing links is just not going to be enough: in a world where tweets have a very short lifetime, you need to give your curated content a second chance by putting it on a curation layer where it can be discovered from search and from people with similar interests.

This can be a blog, a site or a Scoop.it page but if you're going to make content curation part of your content marketing strategy, you will need that long term repository that social networks don't bring.

Facebook Introduces Pinterest-Style, Curated "Collections"

Facebook Introduces Pinterest-Style, Curated "Collections" | A Marketing Mix | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Facebook has introduced a new curation feature designed to allow its users to collect and organize their favorite "products" into so-called "Collections".

According to Hubspot "the new feature called 'Collections,' allows marketers to add “Want” or “Collect” buttons to news feed posts about products."

Source: http://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/33698/Facebook-Tests-Pinterest-Style-Feature-Called-Collections.aspx

The new FB "Collections" is publicly available to everyone, and it is being tested "with 7 retail partners -- Pottery Barn, Wayfair, Victoria’s Secret, Michael Kors, Neiman Marcus, Smith Optics, and Fab.com."

(you need to go to those FB brad pages to test it).

It also seems that the feature can be activated in at least three different ways by one of these three upcoming action buttons:

a) "Want": adds the product to a Timeline section of a user's profile called “Wishlist”

b) "Collect": adds the item to a Collection called “Products”

c) "Like": a special version of the standard "Like" button that also adds the item to “Products”

N.B.: While Collections are free for business pages to use, they're only visible to the page's fans. You have to "Like" the page in order to see these types of posts.
