Changing The Learning Process

Until now, this level of personalization has been limited to small classrooms, though AI makes every classroom feel like a small one. AI systems analyze students' progress on a scale that teachers alone cannot, effectively minimizing the student-teacher ratio problem. AI systems also erase distance. Learning happens anywhere at any time.

Another benefit of AI-augmented education is that it isn't judgemental. Constructive criticism from an AI tutor can feel less intimidating than a fellow human. Students, especially the underserved, who may not be accustomed to such feedback, are likely to respond more positively to this feedback and are thus more likely to seek it out in the future. Feedback from AI systems is instantaneous and thereby extremely effective and can be acted on immediately.

Part of the challenge facing educationalists is that technological change will call for skills that fall outside of age-old approaches to curriculum design and teaching. Emotional intelligence, creative thinking, and collaboration are just three core aptitudes that will be needed, but which cannot easily be taught in a traditional classroom environment.

“Updating curriculum should always be on the agenda,” says Jaime Saavedra of the World Bank, quoted in the WEFFI report. “But it is incredibly urgent to invest in changing the behaviour of teachers and improving what happens inside the classroom.

The ITD curriculum could do with  an upgrade, not taking the  traditional use of hand tools and machinery away but branch out & create a greater forum for STEM /STEAM based electives giving the traditional manual arts students opportunities to advance their creative thinking, problem solving & design skills to new levels, broadening their horizons for employment of trade based entry  into the workforce.

Paradigm - Wikipedia | Time to make a #ParadigmShift in #EDUcation, ISN'T it?!!

Paradigm - Wikipedia

Kuhn's idea was, itself, revolutionary in its time. It caused a major change in the way that academics talk about science; and, so, it may be that it caused (or was part of) a "paradigm shift" in the history and sociology of science. However, Kuhn would not recognize such a paradigm shift.

In science and philosophy, a paradigm /ˈpærədm/ is a distinct set of concepts or thought patterns, including theories, research methods, postulates, and standards for what constitutes legitimate contributions to a field.

“The future of education is digital. We live in an increasingly digital world, where technology is a part of our lives in so many ways. Now more than ever, it is crucial that we incorporate digital technology into education. To prepare students for higher education and future jobs, we must ensure that they are familiar with technology. Administrators who want to prepare their K-12 school for the future of education should look at the ways they use technology in the classroom. Schools that are future-ready are those that blend technology with learning seamlessly and include technology in nearly every lesson.”

I just shared my thoughts on the future of education, but what do my peers think? To find out, we decided to produce an expert roundup on the topic of the future of education. We asked 106 education experts to answer one question: “What are your thoughts on the future of education?” In part 1 of this series, we will focus on the future of K-12.

Why Are Schools So Bad At Preparing Students For Modern Jobs? | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing #DigitalSkills #eSkills  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

If schools are supposed to be training the workers of the future, the growing consensus is that most of them are not doing a very good job of it.

In a trend that seems long overdue, technology-based companies are increasingly turning inward to bridge the gap between the skills they need employees have and the skills they’re actually graduating from college with.

In 8 Critical Skills For A Modern Education, we offered one view of what ‘modern workplace’ skills might look like, and have argued many times that true ’21st-century learning’ should change what work looks like all together.

(Nevermind that, in our estimation anyway, the purpose of school is not job training.)

Still, companies (for now, anyway) need human workers with certain skills that, increasingly, they just don’t have. It’s nearly 2018, and the concept of 21st-century skills is more than two decades old now.

What does a community manager do and what skills do they need? | #DigitalSkills #SocialMedia #ICT #Jobs | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
If you work in social media, explaining your job can be a frustrating experience - especially to family members who probably assume that you just use Facebook all day.

For Community Managers, in particular, there tends to be a lot of confusion over exactly what the role entails.

To clear things up, I thought I’d delve into the world of community management and find out why it’s becoming increasingly important for brands of all kinds.

Here’s a beginner’s guide.

What does a community manager do?

The role of a community manager is to act as the bridge between a brand and the community it is aiming to create (i.e. a loyal audience or group of core consumers connected by a similar interest).

They should be the brand’s ambassador, engaging with potential customers and building relationships with existing ones. They are also focused on gauging sentiment around the brand, using social listening tools in order to monitor feedback and engagement.

Nonetheless, I think it’s becoming more and more clear that in modern classrooms, the role and perceived value of the teacher needs to change.

From a content and skills standpoint, why wouldn’t we expect teachers to connect their students to the smartest, most experienced experts they can find online? (Here’s a story of my own experience of doing that when I was in the classroom.)

And why wouldn’t we see the primary value of a classroom teacher to be a) understanding each individual child for who they are as a learner, and b) using that understanding to help them develop as even more powerful learners on their own?

Are We Over-Concerned About Fairness? | #GrowthMindset #LEADERship  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Bigger issues:

#1. Unfairness is necessary. Giving second chances, for example, isn’t fair to those who perform on schedule and within expectation. But, not giving second chances is cruel.

#2. Fairness is merciless. Mercy is not getting what you deserve. In other words, mercy isn’t fair.

#3. Equal opportunity must include reward or lack of reward. Those who seize opportunities earn reward. Those who don’t seize opportunities don’t earn reward. It’s important to note that it’s not necessary to punish those who don’t seize opportunity.

Rewarding teams always includes some unfairness.

#4. Fairness – treating everyone the same – de-motivates high achievers and rewards low performers.

#5. Fairness, when it means everyone is treated the same, promotes inaction. If you can’t be do something for everyone then you can’t do it for anyone. The result is you don’t do much.

Where does machine learning fit in the education sector? | #ModernEDU  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Those who understand learning and work with young people know that in an uncertain world of rapid change we urgently need to be helping learners to take risks, to work in teams, to develop a greater understanding of the way systems and societies work, and to become more creative. Fundamentally, these things have been washed out of the system in favour of a ‘learn fact, repeat fact’ model.

To get the best out of this technology in the future, educators need to turn the current systems upside down.

In previous technology developments in education – such as multimedia, whiteboards or the internet – initially, most worried that they would upset the world they were used to and feared for their jobs. Only a few imagined how these technologies could change the world and make things better. In reality, new technologies are typically highjacked to inappropriately maintain the status quo and end up powering the exam sausage factory.

Moving forward into 2017, it is not the tech itself that needs to change. In most aspects of our lives, technology has made significant changes (for good and bad), but in education, particularly schools, there is still stubborn resistance.

To maximise the use of technology in the future, educators need to embrace these technologies that can change the world and make things better. Moving forward into 2017, it is not the technology itself that needs to change, but rather people's attitudes, particularly in education where there is still often stubborn resistance.
Belinda 's curator insight, June 12, 2017 12:44 AM
Perhaps I am being naive but if 21st Century Teachers are to be teaching 21st Century Students with 21st Century technology in a 21st Century Society isn't it time for a 21st Century Education System?  It seems that exams and assignments necessary to allocate a student a grade that is then provided to parents/caregivers is still what drives the education system.   Schools/Teachers plan their units based on the assessment items and teach students according to 'what is on the exam'. Is quantifying a child's knowledge for statistics as important as generating higher order thinking, creativity, cultural and ethical awareness and active citizenship?  Surely there is another way of reporting on a student's progression during their education?  And this isn't the School/Teachers fault - society has become so set on students being labelled as an 'A' student or B, C, D etc that this is what is expected.

There is a high amount of anxiety in children from a very young age and I have seen students become quite confused and anxious when there is no 'correct answer' to a question.  Does this stem from crushing the imagination and being told that there is a certain way things must be done?  Why not nurture the creativity in children and we may have them building robots and inventing devices that can change the world by the time they are 10 years old.

If teachers are to implement the technology to its full advantage then measuring a students' success, knowledge and how to apply this knowledge needs to change in line with the technology.  In such a dramatically changing world, 'assessing' a student hasn't changed for decades - they are still assessed by how much they can cram for an exam and then that information is often forgotten and not used again or when it is required it is re-learnt.  Lets get students creating and using their knowledge more and not be so subject specific - in the real world we use and apply a set of skills not just a subject. So why not start giving students 1-2 projects that encompass a holistic view of the subjects we teach (science, maths, english, humanities, social sciences, art, information technology) and have students use technology to implement the four C's - critical thinking and problem solving, communicating, collaboration, creativity and innovation. While we're at it why not report on the four C's and nothing else.

How to transform schools into Learning Organisations? | #ModernLEARNing #ModernEDU

How to transform schools into Learning Organisations? | #ModernLEARNing #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Schools nowadays are required to learn faster than ever before in order to deal effectively with the growing pressures of a rapidly changing environment. Many schools however, look much the same today as they did a generation ago, and too many teachers are not developing the pedagogies and practices required to meet the diverse needs of 21st-century learners.

In response, a growing body of scholars, educators and policy makers around the world is making the case that schools should be re-conceptualised as “learning organisations” that can react more quickly to changing external environments, embrace innovations in internal organisation, and ultimately improve student outcomes.

Despite strong support for and the intuitive appeal of the school as a learning organisation, relatively little progress has been made in advancing the concept, either in research or practice. This lack of progress partly stems from a lack of clarity or common understanding of the school as learning organisation.

Bringing Students Into Professional Development | #StudentVoice #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Professional development is evolving. Slowly but surely, schools and organizations are attempting to move away from the typical sit-and-get workshop and creating formats that promote problem solving and boost participant engagement. This has led to a rise in PD that makes educators the drivers of innovation.

This trend is awesome.

The problem: Participants are forced to make a lot of assumptions about their students because they’re not given a chance to include those students in the process.

The Future of Education is Unstructured Learning, and Here's Why

The Future of Education is Unstructured Learning, and Here's Why | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Unstructured learning is an authentic real-world way of learning. That’s because the real world itself doesn’t have neat compartments or set disciplines for success. It demands adaptability, patience, and a willingness to learn and to use what is learned in the moment. Most of all, it requires us to take full responsibility for what we learn.

It’s time to play and to let go of rigid teaching in favour of unstructured learning. For this to happen, teachers have to foster trust in their students. They have to be willing to take a step back and put a little slack on the reins of traditional pedagogy. In short, we need to let things get a little messy. Ease into it—it’s a bold step and it will transform everything.

So what do you think?

Carlos Fosca's curator insight, December 26, 2017 8:36 AM

(Global Digital Citizen Foundation, 2017)

Jerry Busone's curator insight, January 5, 2018 8:14 AM

Unstructured learning brings real to your workshops and classroom. Its not YOU the teacher doing all the presenting but its about guiding and facilitating people through real world problems and allowing them to innovate, apply principles ,models  and come to their own conclusions. Just like there are many ways to lead and sell there are many ways to learn ...

Digital is making students masters of their own learning universe

Digital is making students masters of their own learning universe | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

New ways of learning, owing much to digital technology and scientific research, are empowering students and business trainees.

The challenge we face is that learning is often not built to fit the learners,” says Dr Itiel Dror, a cognitive neuroscientist from University College London. “There is a mismatch between the learning and the learners. Learning must be ‘brain friendly’, so it’s engaging, motivating and effective.

The sector is being forced to step up its game. Since education operates in a world where millennials now check their phones more than 100 times a day, e-learning solutions must compete aggressively with the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Candy Crush, which are just a distracting tap away.

“The use of technology, by itself, does not enhance learning, it depends on how it’s utilised. That is a great challenge and we are far from using technology to its full potential,” says Dr Dror, a world expert on learning.

The problem lies with most educational systems, globally. Since Victorian times, they’ve been creating mostly dependent learners. Beyond the classroom, students are like fish out of water, gasping for air. They’re reliant on the oxygen of teachers, discipline and schooling to acquire new skills.

This isn’t necessarily creating self-starters thirsty for knowledge and masters of their own learning.

Self-directed strategies are increasingly needed because a dependent-learner strategy cannot keep pace with the latest business developments, says Vincent Belliveau, executive vice president of Cornerstone OnDemand.

The true democratisation of education is now in full swing. “If we want to reach a level of greater learning empowerment, we must provide learners with the authority to be able to curate their own content and the resources to facilitate this. It’s only then that we will truly find learning empowerment,” Mr Belliveau concludes. The tools are all in place. It’s only a matter of time.

Today, Kids Need To Learn More Than Facts, But To Solve Problems And Innovate

Today, Kids Need To Learn More Than Facts, But To Solve Problems And Innovate | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Traditionally, we went to school to attain knowledge. The smart kids knew that Columbus discovered America in 1492 and that the square root of 64 is eight. They studied diligently at home so that when the teacher asked a question they could shoot their hand up and be praised for their good work.

Today, however, teenagers carry far more information and computing power in their pockets than would ever fit in their heads. So the ability to retain knowledge and manipulate numbers with facility has become, to a large extent, outdated skills. So kids today need to learn how to understand systems and solve problems.

Fortunately, there are an increasing number of programs that are designed to do just that. At the college level, programs like Stanford's d.school teach design thinking and entrepreneurship classes have become standard in business school curriculums. More recently, a wide variety of secondary school level programs have begun to take hold and are giving students a leg up.

One critical component of this that was not included it to know if the source of the facts they get is trustworthy. More and more what was once a trusted source of information leaves a lot out, or skews the facts making it difficult if not impossible get to the truth!
Barbara Goebel's curator insight, June 6, 2017 11:45 AM
Frankly, this has always been the ultimate goal in the sciences, but the way-stations of memorized facts and processes have led to standard assessments that are low rigor and less than useful in determining student understanding. Let's model the heck out of our world and figure out some solutions!
MrBieb's curator insight, June 16, 2017 5:05 AM

Toch dient er altijd een basis aan begrippen (woordenschat) kennis geleerd te worden alvorens überhaupt de berg aan informatie beklommen of uitgespit kan worden.Klassiek onderwijs blijft nodig.
